Health insurance

Hey ladies, I have only posted here a few times reguarding my wife. We are in our early 40’s, with 2 beautiful girls 11 and 5.She is Stage 4 with a small number of bone mets to her spine. She is doing real well on Letrozole/Ibrance for the past 14 months.

I have a wonderful opportunity to change jobs to one they would allow me more time off and more flexibility.

The only problem is the doctor and hospital whom she has been going to is considered out of network with the new employer’s insurance plan. I would never ask her to stop going there, she loves her onc and the hospital.

Do you ladies know if there is any additional insurance that I could buy that would cover out of network expenses for a pre-existing illness?

Congratulations on finding a job with more flexibility and time off! FMLA won't be available to you right away but maybe you won't need it. Have you looked into the cost to COBRA your current coverage? I think you can pay for up to 18 months on your own - by then perhaps your new employer will have changed their plan offerings to include her providers.

Another possibility might be going on Social Security Disability which then entitles her to get Medicare after 2 years. If she had enough work credits in the previous decade, the benefit paid every month will be what she would receive at full retirement age. That may be enough to purchase additional insurance. Talk to an agent or broker.

With metastatic disease, the SSD application which is done on line, gets fast tracked under a Compassionate Allowance. Mine was approved in ten days. By using current treatments involving CDK 4/6 inhibitors, many of us are hoping to be around for a good long while. Your girls will certainly enjoy having their mom there for them.
