hi .. I am having a DIEP flap reconstruction soon. I'm curious what type of clothing would be the best to purchase. There are the shirts with pockets for drains are they worth investing in? My Doctor said light clothing that will have no pressure on the breast area and that I will not wear a bra for a few weeks. Would simple button down shirts be fine?

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

Nicole

Button down shirts are great or just a really big shirt that you can put on without lifting arms over your head. You can invest in a drain shirt but I just pinned the drains to my tummy binder (which some PS use and some do not. For showers you can just pin the drains to a lanyard or long shoestring around the neck.

    Ndruid,

I just wore oversized button down shirts. I actually used my husband's shirts. And got a couple pairs of yoga pants a size bigger. As for the drains, I used a lanyard for showers and just pinned them to my binder. The nurse at my doctor kept telling me to get camisole that zipped and had pockets for the drains. I think I had drains for 3 weeks and I'm glad i didn't spend the money. I also would get what I call granny underwear, ones where the elastic will not rub your incision.

One thing I found very valuable was a recliner chair with a lift. It helped with sleeping and getting up. I was lucky enough to find a non-profit that loans the chairs to people having mastectomies.

And my plastic surgeon gave me great advice...Eat plenty of Protein. It helps with healing.

Good Luck with everything and take it easy and don't over do it.
