HI..very new here. I am s/p savi guided lumpectomy of biopsy proven LCIS of left breast. Surgery was on 12/30/19 and just had my post op f/u with my surgeon earlier last week. We discussed hormonal treatment and he suggested tamoxifen. However when i picked up my Rx, it was raloxifene. I spoke with him today and mentioned all the literature I have read clearly stated tamoxifen for pre-perimenopausal and raloxifene for post menopausal.

I am 52 yrs old and still getting my cycle every month although they are longer and more frequent over the past 18 months. Has anyone here taken raloxifene instead of tamoxifen under the same circumstances? Any major side effects? Surgeon stated it was perfectly safe and has a lesser side effect profile than tamoxifen, but i am still concerned. Going to speak with ob/gyn and maybe internist as well to get their advice but was wondering if anyone here has experience with either drug?

Why is your surgeon prescribing these meds? That's the first problem.

The second problem is that to my understanding, raloxifene is approved only for post-menopausal patients. https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-5191/raloxifene-oral/details "This medication should not be used before menopause."

The appropriate doctor to speak to about this and to determine the right med for you is a Medical Oncologist, not a surgeon or an ob/gyn or internist. An ob/gyn or internist might take over monitoring you after you've had the discussion and recommendation from the MO, but this decision/recommendation clearly falls into the domain of an MO.

Thank you Bessie. That was my major concern, as I stated in my original post. I don't have medical oncologist, but guess i will have to get one to speak with.
