Surgery in two days.

Hi everyone, my first post.

I'm to have a simple bilateral mastectomy on thursday 19. I'll be in there for a few days as I have nobody to go home to who will help me adjust and recovery. I'm not afraid of the surgery or having no breasts but I am concerned about how I will function with my arms and how long that will take to return to 'normal'. I'm very active and not obese.

I had bilateral simple mastectomies with immediate reconstruction. As soon as my drains came out, I had full range of motion. I still work and went back to work in 4 weeks. So far, so good.

Everyone is different. My niece was pretty much back to normal in about 10 days, I felt like I was knocked in the dirt for about 3 weeks and my sister just had BMX on Thursday and other than lifting things or reaching up over her head, she is basically back to “normal” ( some minor fatigue). (She actually can raise her hands over her head but PS instructed her not to. I, on the other hand couldn’t reach a glass if my life depended on it). I should add that my niece and sister both had prophylactic BMX, so no lymph node removal. I had 5 nodes removed. So, hopefully things will go smoothly and recovery will be manageable. Hoping for a speedy recovery for you!

Thanks to you all. It seems it is different for everybody. I've just been told I will have another sentinel node biopsy in the left side on the day. (Hate that dye injection, but they have to cover all bases I guess.) I'm hoping there won't be any node removal.

Buxomshadow, I had bilateral mx one week ago today and feel really good today. I’ve been walking every day. I had SNB with one node removed and tissue expanders placed. I had one drain removed yesterday and the other will be removed next week. If you get some meals prepared in the freezer you should be ok after a couple days to be home alone. Sleeping in a recliner isn’t great but doable. Good luck to you!
