BIA-ALCL after removal of implant?

Hi everyone,

I had my gummy implant (the one that was recalled) removed from my reconstructed breast removed about four years ago due to capsular contracture. Recently that same implant-free breast has started killing. It feels swollen and the whole area is just so sore. My blood tests have also been wonky, with low white blood cell counts.

Is it possible to have BIA-ALCL even though the implant was removed four years ago? The surgeon didn't test the capsule that was left behind for BIA-ALCL when he removed it, because at the time, the relationship between the BIA-ALCL wasn't an issue.

Any thoughts? Anyone?

I guess it's possible but also you might have breast &/or truncal LE.

I saw my PS this week and she said two cases have been reported in women who had their textured implants removed years earlier.

In any case, you probably need to run that by the doc. Living in pain is no fun.

Thanks for your input, I’m getting an MRI of the breast this week.

My PS, who is head of plastics for a major teaching hospital, has not personally seen any cases. The percentages are VERY low.

Still I did get an MRI just to reassure myself and everything was fine. Head of radiology said come back in 2 years for another ultrasound.

If you had biocell textured implants like myself, unfortunately, yes, you have a lifetime risk even if they were removed. If you have symptoms, you may want to consult with a knowledgeable PS. THey can test for BiaALCL if you have a mass or fluid. It wouldn't hurt to ask if there is a remote possibility they still have your capsules, if they could test them. The guidelines for testing have just recently changed so we've learned a lot in the past year. Check out biaalcl.com or their Facebook group page for up to date info. Just like with breast cancer, we should always be aware of any changes in your breasts, check with your doc, and do your research.
