Non lactational mastitis - what can a surgeon do?

    Hi,

I'm in my 40s and haven't breastfed a baby for 7 years. So on Halloween I was surprised to feel the classic symptoms of mastitis (I had it twice while nursing my babies and they are unmistakable!). It came on suddenly, sending me to bed early. The next day, I saw my GP who put me on antibiotics and ordered a mammogram and ultrasound. Long story short, they found a abscess. It took two different antibiotics to resolve, but it did. After I completed the antibiotics, I went back for a follow-up u/s and the breast radiologist declared it 100% resolved and ruled out any malignancies.

I'm still getting brown discharge from my nipple, however, two weeks after completing the antibiotics. My GP is sending me to a breast surgeon. However - what can a breast surgeon do if there is no longer an abscess? I'm very confused by the whole thing.

    Thanks for your thoughts.
