Breast surgeon and plastic surgeon recommendations- SFBA
Hello ladies,
I was diagnosed in October and going through the chemo now. Will be having surgery early next year and doing my research now. I am with Kaiser (Redwood City) and so far has been pleased with them. I haven't had detailed discussions with the surgeons yet since I've started with the chemo first. I also got another PPO insurance and will have an option to have surgeries done at Stanford or UCSF. Has anyone done surgery and reconstruction at any of these hospitals? Can you please share your experience and doctor recommendations?
Thank you!

I am scheduled for a left mx and free flap reconstructions with Kaiser Santa Clara on March 9. The PS in RWC does not do autologous reconstruction. I am not interested in implants and the life long maintenance they require. Ho and Santoro in Santa Clara apparently do more autologous procedures (primarily diep) than any other Kaiser in No. Cal. I live in RWC and will likely have follow-up done there. Tomorrow I meet Dr. Ho to discuss where the flap will be removed.
My biggest recommendation is get a 2nd opinion.
What is your update? If you want to DM each other since we are seeing the same doctors, etc.

I can't say enough about Nima A. Grissom, M.D. 415-600-1817 . She was my surgeon 11 years ago. She is in San Francisco.

My oncoplastic surgeon performed both my BMX and simultaneous direct to implant prepectoral reconstruction. She typically operates at CPMC.

I had some issues with my initial textured implants and she also did my revision surgery to switch to smooth rounds. She has excellent skills and experience and has been wonderfully responsive and supportive.

Hi Magari,
I'm on the east coast and had my BMX after AC/T chemo and 30 rounds of radiation for a very similar diagnosis as you in 2015 and reconstruction with Allergen Natrelle 410 highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled Textured Implants (FDA recall) in Sept. 2016. After tissue expander replacement I found them to be far more comfortable. However I always had issues when wearing a bra. I would have quite a bit of pain and burning for days and would subsequently go without until it would subside. I am now having these issues most of the time with some capsular contracture on right radiated was side. I am finding them to be increasingly uncomfortable on both sides. Obviously, there has been a big concern knowing these are the recalled implants. Did you have the anatomical and when you switched to the smooth rounds did you find them more comfortable and were you happy with the look? I was never happy with these. They are so hard and they do not move whatsoever feeling like I have two rocks on my chest. I am contemplating a switch to the smooth rounds too. I feel like I should just wait til it gets to be unbearable At times it is so uncomfortable and unbearable. The burning is concerning and I have met with my ps and she passes it off as neuropathy. I will be looking to get at least two more opinions . I would love some feedback on what I just explained and wondering if anyone else has had similar symptoms and switched them with smooth rounds that they found far more comfortable. Anxiety is starting to creep in and I’m so afraid to switch and have major problems yet I don’t know how long I can live with this uncomfortable feeling of burning.

Hi there, I am looking at Diep after an implant rupture. Can you tell me how your experience went with Dr. Ho and Dr Santoro at Kaiser, please?

I know this is an old thread, but if you are still researching reconstructive surgeons in the Bay Area, the ones that I’ve been referred to are Dr. Momeni and Dr. Nazerali, both with Stanford. Dr Moneni specializes in autologous reconstruction. Dr. Nazerali also does autologous, is in the same reconstructive surgery practice and was listed as a “Castle Connolly Top Doctor”.

Hi,
If you r looking for a good breast surgeon, I recommend to see Dr. Nima Grissom from CPMC in san Francisco. I had seen 3 surgeons , 1 from Stanford and 1 from UCSF top surgeons and I chose Dr. Grissom. She is extraordinary in skill, knowledge and support with my experience. It took only 1 hr and 15 minutes to do bilateral mastectomy and everything went well. No issues I encountered. She was very patient and explained, showed it would look like after surgery and even gave me her personal cellphone number to reach out her and responded right away, helped to get schedule even she had tight schedules sometimes. I strongly recommend her.
Good luck
