Post surgical pathology report

Hello beautiful pink 💕😇s,

1.8 cm tumor by ultrasound.

Grade 2

TNBC diagnosis on 5 mm biopsy.

NO PRIOR chemo. (No chemo in the picture)!

Pre surgical clip was correctly placed and doesn’t move (we are assured).

Elected mastectomy done with 2 sentinel and 2 smaller lymph nodes taken.

Surgeon reports to us: "no cancer cells found" in the final surgical pathology. Pathologist states he even extended his search in the tissue - no cancer cells found.

(Lymph nodes also negative).

Has anyone ever had (or heard of) such a thing? We are sort of reeling from this news....

Also, what is done with the breast tissue? Do they keep it???

Thank you.

Maybe all cancer cells were removed with the biopsy?

Hey KTF. Yes, it does happen because it happened to me this past summer. Mammogram found suspicious calcifications, MRI found a small area of enhancement. Biopsy done and a 1.5 mm invasive lobular cancer was found along with a ton of LCIS and other abnormal cells. Surgeon recommended mastectomy which was done several weeks later. This was my final path report:

Note: The mastectomy specimen was carefully examined and two healing biopsy
sites were identified. The tissue surrounding and intervening the biopsy sites
was extensively sampled and microscopically examined; no residual invasive
carcinoma was identified. By report, a small amount of invasive carcinoma was
identified in the biopsy material, please see the biopsy specimens XS19-13295
and XS19-13401 for those results. Extensive lobular neoplasia is present in the
mastectomy, including focal florid (nonclassical) type lobular carcinoma in-situ
in the region of the biopsy sites. Immunostains for Keratin WS, Keratin AE1/3,
calponin, myosin, and p63 were examined to evaluate for focal invasion.

When I met with my oncologist a month after surgery, she told me that it doesn't happen very often. She offered an AT and said she was going to let me decide whether to take it or not. In the end, I decided not to since the risks far outweighed the benefits. I think a celebration is in order for you and your family! I know that I'm still celebrating!

Hello AZBG, thank you so much for taking time and your for thorough reply.

Can you please give a cliff note version w/ respect to your post surgical report? I am seeing no residual invasive cancer found at the biopsy sites but then mention of invasive cancer in biopsy sites and “extensive neoplasia” in the mastectomy specimen including carcinoma in-situ in the biopsy sites.

I am trying to understand how this was positive? What is AT?

Thank you in advance for clarifying at your convenience and I am happy you have had positive outcome!

    😇💕

KTFBB...What it's saying is that invasive lobular was found during the pre surgery biopsy, (By report, a small amount of invasive carcinoma was
identified in the biopsy material) and goes on to list the specimens frozen before surgery.) The lobular neoplasm found during final path was the various abnormal cells and is explained here:

    https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/benign/lobul...

Oops, what I meant was that oncologist suggested AI's...aromatase inhibitors.

Hopes this helps clarify. I think we both dodged a bullet with regards to the final outcome!
