Confused, anybody else?
Good morning everyone, so, i have a question, last year i noticed a lump in my left breast, i had it checked and my report stated "6.1 x 3.9 x 7.8 mm circumscribed mass, this lesion demonstrates increased sound through -transmission and is compatible with benign cyst. The past month or so I have felt like it is enlarging and has become a bit tender in that area so I went to have it checked, now my report states : " irregular hypoechoic mass in the antiradial projection which is oriented antiparallel to the skin measuring 3.7 x 2.8 x 4.4 mm, birads 4a, biopsy should be considered, I have an apt with my surgeon in two weeks. my question is, has anyone had a so called cyst turn into something else and if so, what was it. I did a little research and could find nothing except bad news so I have quit looking, but I hate not knowing something, my clinic doesn't tell me anything other then I need to make an apt with the breast surgeon for a biopsy and until I meet with her I am basically left in the dark with all kinds of negative thoughts so any incite to from someone who has gone thorough the same thing would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Cysts don’t “turn into“ anything else. The measurements on whatever they are currently seeing are considerably smaller than the probable cyst last year and have a 4a, which is a less than 10% chance of being anything to worry about. I’m not sure what you are interpreting as bad news, or if this is even the same finding as last time

Hi Laniejoe, I completely understand how not knowing is worrisome! Perhaps DJMammo can weigh in on what your report states if you post a copy of it in the "interpreting your report" forum. From what I learned from my doctors, cysts are almost always benign, and there are benign causes of hypoechoic masses such as fibroadenomas and fybrocystic changes. If a cyst is a complex cyst, there is a very very very slight chance that it could be associated with an underlying malignancy, but again that is a very very slight chance. In my non-cancerous breast, I had a hypoechoic mass that was monitored at 6 month follow-ups for a while, even before my diagnosis in the other breast. It was first believed to be a fibroadenoma, and then it was "upgraded" and believed to be a complex cyst. At my most recent ultrasound after completing all of my active treatment for breast cancer (which again was in the other breast), the ultrasound showed that even though it is solid, it had no other features that could be associated with malignancy, and I am now back to just regular yearly screenings. So even though I had breast cancer, it was not associated at all with the hypoechoic cyst, and my doctors have ruled that out as anything worrisome or that needs more frequent monitoring. Hopefully this gives you a little reassurance as you await your biopsy. Best of luck to you and please keep us informed. Hugs!!
Edited to add these helpful articles: one is from this website, and the other one is a website that I found helpful in explaining terms when I was first sent for biopsy.

Lanie, thanks so much for the well wishes and prayers! I do feel like I am on my way to a full recovery. Had a little scare this week but all turned out great with just a false positive. You are so right that our brain becomes an enemy during the waiting period. I pray for the best for you also and hope that all is benign for you!
