MRI denied because of IUD

Hello. I am about to turn 48 years old. I have a family history of breast cancer. My Mother had BC twice and my maternal grandmother also. I tested negative for BRCA 1 and 2. For the past 8-10 years or so, I have been getting MRIs as one part of my screening plan, almost each time while having an IUD in place. About six months ago, my dr at the imaging institute stated that he would like to do my next MRI without my IUD. He never said anything about any policies or procedures. He made me believe it was just his personal preference.

About 6 weeks ago, I went to my gyn to change out my IUD as it had expired. She stated that I would be fine keeping it because it didn’t release progesterone. So I had a new Mirena inserted. Then yesterday, I went to back to the imaging institute for another suspicious area in my breast. I had a mammogram and ultrasound. The dr said that I had many more cysts, both simple and complex. He then said that I was ineligible for the MRI because I still had an IUD. When I questioned him on how I have always had an IUD in the past, he stated it was a new policy started in the past year. It was adopted because of the high false positives on biopsies given with women who had IUDs and MRIs.

My questions: Is this a policy everywhere? Has anyone else ever heard of this? I hate to go to another facility. And I hate to have the IUD removed especially after 2 months. Will I be charged by my insurance for an early removal? I feel like a ping pong ball bouncing between two physicians. Any advice? Thank you in advance.
