Hi everybody. I am strongly considering getting a breast lift and possible reduction on my left (non-cancer) breast. The doctor I consulted with said he could do fat grafting on my right breast to give it a smoother, rounder appearance. Has anyone had this done after a breast lumpectomy? I would like any input you could offer. I have sent a letter to my doctor at Duke to ask how this could interfere with the accuracy of a mammogram. Also, what is the recovery period like? Thanks.

I had fat grafting after a mastectomy which is a bit different. But fat grafting procedure is pretty much the same. It depends where he takes the fat from. I had it removed from my stomach which was a disaster because my stomach was flat to begin with. Hence I now have a ripple-y cellulitely looking stomach. I think my BS was an idiot to take it from there and I did question him a few times about that but he kept saying it would be okay as it was only a small amount he was taking. He ruined my stomach. So a cautionary tale. However, I am going to assume you have a good BS who is experienced in fat grafting, in which case it took about 4-6 weeks to heal. I had to wear a girdle for much of the time. I found it more painful that the actual breast transfer, but nothing that a couple of Tylenol couldn't handle. But I was up and about immediately, it didn't interfere with my everyday life too much. Two days relaxing doing nothing was enough to recover from the surgery itself.

It did make my breast looks better and more smooth for quite awhile, but it didn't last (I don't think he got enough) as my body reabsorbed the fat fairly quickly. I think that I am 'an odd one out' though. If you have enough fat to transfer, then I think its definitely worth it.

    Good Morning,

It looks like you have been through a lot. Thank you for responding. Were you lucky enough to escape lymphedema? I have moderate lymphedema from lymph node removal and radiation.

I am sorry that you were disappointed with the transfer from the stomach. I am not overweight - however, I could stand to lose at least 10 lbs. of belly fat and if not from there I have extra on the upper thighs as well.

I wish you all the best - hugs, JoAnn

    Hi

Sorry for late response. I managed to escape lymphedema although I suspect I have very mild lymphedema in my trunk area. I am very proactive, I get lymphatic massage at least once every 2 months or so just in case.

Good luck with your fat transfer. Like I said I dont think I was a good candidate I really didnt have any belly fat. Ten pounds of belly fat sounds like enough, I hope it a goes well!
