Wedding dresses for flatties

Hi friends. I am a 33-year-old "flattie" and recently engaged. I'm excited, and also sad and scared about dresses. I want to wear some kind of standard/typical wedding dress.

Does anyone have any insights, recommendations, stories, tips for doing this without breasts? I've been unable to wear any of my old formal dresses, I am pretty much terrified to start looking for a wedding dress. I never particularly wanted to wear strapless, so that doesn't bother me much, but even regular clothes for women are made to accommodate breasts. Wedding dresses in particular seem to as well. Any help is appreciated.

What about am awesome 1920s style dress? Those dresses were not really designed for big curves. Think Downton Abbey. And remember, every bride needs a good seamstress to make that dress perfect. Best wishes for a fabulous wedding and many many years of happy married life!

I love the idea of a 1920's style dress, Shetland! And you're right that any gown needs a specialized seamstress, no matter whether you have breasts or not. I don't know what size city or town you live in, but there are usually seamstresses that specialize in wedding gowns and even make them from scratch--ask around. If you happen to live in Houston or Austin, Texas, I know a woman in each city who will create the dress of your dreams or alter one you have bought. There has to be someone like that near you!

LightningBlue, how great for you that in a year of sorrow and loss (that's all it can be called), you will also have this joy! Congratulations, and share a picture when you find that beautiful dress!

I went to the Downton Abbey Exhibition when I was in Florida last winter. They had a whole display featuring the wedding dresses different characters wore at their weddings. Here are a few pictures that might give you some ideas (the last picture is from the back, but I'm posting it just because it is gorgeous!).

I wasn’t big before I went flat. I wore my mothers dress from the 50s and she added a little padding so no bra was needed. A great seamstress should be in everyone’s contacts.

I love the Downton Abby fashions andthey are very flat. You will rock whatever dress you find. You will be a beautiful bride. Own it!

Thank you all so much for writing!! I do love the idea of a '20s style dress. I hadn't considered them for myself because I am a curvy hourglass shape, and now that the top curves are gone I just look like I'm wearing a potato sack in those silhouettes... but a good seamstress seems to be a good idea no matter what.

Well, in that case, I would think you might call your new figure an A or Pear rather than X or Hourglass, and start with dresses that flatter this shape. A 1920s dress is indeed best on an H or straight figure. As with X, A tends to look good with a defined waist. Embellishments at the waist and/or shoulders. Emphasize a graceful back or neck. Consider an A-line dress.

I love the 20's idea. 'Miss Fisher' on Netflix has many fabulous dresses. I know you can see photos of her online. If you have Netflix you might enjoy this independent strong woman.

My daughter is an A cup (at max) and she was a gorgeous bride.

We had a fun field trip to a fancy bridal shop and found several beautiful silhouettes for her. The back view of a wedding dress is important as that's what everyone sees for the whole service. A plunging back w a high neck is really pretty.

The Megan Markle boat-neck top would be an option.... Look at what Jackie O wore for her wedding and other formal events, as she was a small-breasted woman with a nipped in waist and great style. Kiera Knightly is a small breasted very stylish woman. Look at the oscar looks she has worn for some ideas.

Last idea: do you have a favorite sexy and flattering blouse or top that you like to wear, that a seamstress could copy in a white elegant fabric? If so, you can get a beautiful skirt at BHLDN which has a lot of skirt/top combos.
