Mammogram 2 years after DCIS shows "architectural distortion"

Hello everyone,

I spent a lot of time on these forums two years ago when going through mammograms, biopsies, surgery, and radiation for DCIS! Although I found this place to be warm and welcoming, I was kind of hoping I'd never be back. No offense.... :)

However, I just had my annual mammogram last week, and the radiologist detected an area of "architectural distortion" in the same breast that had the DCIS, on the same side. They hadn't yet received my 2018 mammogram results, so at that time they had nothing to compare this year's results with.

Here's what they said: "The right breast shows subtle area of architectural distortion at the 9:00 to 10:00 position of the right breast, mid depth. Patient has history of DCIS in this breast and it is presumed that the architectural distortion may be postprocedural but requires comparisons to further evaluate."

They have since received my mammogram results from last year, but I'm still waiting for them to give me an update.

In the meanwhile, my questions are:

  1. Is it common for architectural distortions to appear near/at the surgical site?
  2. If so, wouldn't my mammogram last year have shown this? (Full disclosure: I don't *know* that it didn't show it, but no one mentioned it to me if it did. The only note in the results from last year says, "Benign post-operative findings in both breasts. There is no evidence of malignancy.")
Thanks!

Angela
