Aromasin for LCIS treatment

Hello. I had an excision biopsy for ALH and just came back from my post-op appt. with a diagnoses of LCIS. The treatment recommended by the surgeon was Aromasin for five years. But looking through the discussion forums it appears most people have it as a follow up to tamoxifen. I did see this on the breastcancer.org website.

"Research published in 2011 showed that Aromasin can lower risk in high-risk, postmenopausal women who've never been diagnosed with breast cancer. Aromasin is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for this use, but doctors may consider it a good alternative to tamoxifen or Evista."

I'm just wondering if I should get a second opinion?

You can also do a search of "LCIS and Aromasin"(use the blue tool bar) and possibly find others to whom you can pose questions. Wether you seek a second opinion or return to your initial physician with additional questions it certainly helps to be informed and a partner in your care. People with cancer follow Tamoxifen with an aromatase inhibitor if they are staying on medication for an extended period or after they become menopausal..

People with LCIS are just trying to prevent cancer from developing. They can be offered tamoxifen, an aromatase inhibitor or sometimes raloxifene.

A second opinion is always helpful, if your budget allows, and I have gotten them often. More info is better and the appointment gives you an opportunity to consult with another expert on the field. But unlike getting a second pathology opinion, which can be life-saving, I don't think you have to get another opinion estrogen blockers.

That quote is right. Aromasin my never be approved by the FDA because of the cost. Offering Aromasin, or one of the other two Aromatase Inhibitors (Armidex and Letrozole) is the standard procedure.
