I'm a 33 (just turned 33) y/o female who had what my doctor called costochronditis just under my left breast. He told me to put voltaran on it to reduce inflammation. 1 week later my breast started to be painful and than a couple more weeks go by and there's lumpiness all through it on the left side of the nipple area and extends underneath a bit, almost feels like a row of them. Its tender and sore in certain spots, and the doctor who examined it said it might be fibroadenoma....Its been like this for just a little bit over a month now. I have my ultrasound on Tuesday and I'm terrified... My mother in law told me she does not see anything malicious (she's a psychic) but I'm still so very stressed and not sure what to expect on Tuesday.... Will the sonographer know if there's something malicious?

Hi LooLaa, and welcome to Breastcancer.org,

We're so sorry you're here and worrying, but we hope you find relief and answers here. While we know it's hard to not jump to conclusions, try to stay positive that this is nothing but a benign condition, as your doctor expects.

To answer your question about what the ultrasound will show, our main Breastcancer.org site's page on Ultrasound states:

"If an abnormality is seen on mammography or felt by physical exam, ultrasound is the best way to find out if the abnormality is solid (such as a benign fibroadenoma or cancer) or fluid-filled (such as a benign cyst). It cannot determine whether a solid lump is cancerous, nor can it detect calcifications."

We hope this helps and that you get more information soon. Let us know how your appointment goes on Tuesday.

Just got back from my ultrasound and the Sonographer said I did not have breast cancer. I asked him like 10 times. He said it was dense tissue, which I'm assuming medically speaking fibrocystic breasts? due to that fact that the area under my breast feels like a rigged lump, lumpy ridge like effect. The doctor should be receiving my photos tomorrow, so hopefully its the same verdict.
