Fibroadenoma and cancer lump at the same time?

Hello! Newbie here.. sorry if sound like a rookie.. I'm still getting around and don't have much knowledge.

I noticed a lump one month back. My doctor suggested a Mammogram and Ultrasound where they found 2 lumps.

So my question is: Is it possible that one lump is Fibroadenoma and the other is cancer lump. Or that cannot exist at the same time? Can they both be Fibroadenoma?

Results show:

1. Suspicious hypoechoic mass seen right breast 2:00 in area of palpable concern. Recommend tissue sampling utilizing ultrasound guidance.

2. Probable benign fibroadenoma right breast 9:00 requiring short-term follow-up in 6 months with targeted sonogram.

BI-RADS CATEGORY 4 - Suspicious Abnormality; biopsy should be considered.

Yes, it is possible to have one lump that is a fibroadenoma and another separate unrelated lump that is malignant.

It's also possible to have more than one fibroadenoma.

The description of the first mass is not specific enough to understand what makes it suspicious. Is that the full description?

BREAST LIMITED/TARGETED RT

CLINICAL INDICATION: PALP LUMP RT BREAST. ALSO, F/U ABN MAMMO. NO PRIORS.

COMPARISON: Today's mammogram TECHNIQUE: Multiple real time gray scale images were obtained of the right breast in a targeted fashion.

FINDINGS: 9:00 area of mammogram abnormality shows smooth-walled wider than tall hypoechoic nodule 1.7 x 1.1 x 1.3 cm. Probable benign fibroadenoma.

Right breast 2:00 in area of palpable concern shows irregular hypoechoic mass shadowing. Some minimal internal color flow demonstrated as well. This measures 0.9 x 0.7 x 0.5 cm.

No suspicious axillary adenopathy seen. Overall findings are identified within a background of dense parenchymal tissue.

IMPRESSION: 1. Suspicious hypoechoic mass seen right breast 2:00 in area of palpable concern. Recommend tissue sampling utilizing ultrasound guidance.

2. Probable benign fibroadenoma right breast 9:00 requiring short-term follow-up in 6 months with targeted sonogram.

BI-RADS CATEGORY 4 - Suspicious Abnormality; biopsy should be considered.

PollyS, yes it is possible to have one fibroadenoma and another lump 'suspicious' which doesn't mean malignant at this time. I have a fibroadenoma, unchanged since 10 years.

You may be asked to follow up with a breast surgeon who will do a biopsy and/or an MRI to better image this second 'mass'. I hope it turns out benign too.

I’ve had many Fibroadenomas over the years. In 1999, when I had my biopsy we thought it was another Fibroadenoma. It turns out that it was a fibroadenoma, but next to it was a malignant tumor. So, yes, they can happen at the same time. Your chances of both being benign are very good, and if not, the one that’s suspicious is very small so would be early stage

The descriptions of the two masses are very different. The 9:00 mass, being smooth walled and wider than taller, has benign characteristics. The 2:00 mass is suspicious because of the irregular edges, the shadowing and the internal color flow.

Good luck with the biopsy! Hoping this is benign.

Hi Polly, sorry about your recent findings. Hoping I can shed some positive light for you. I very recently just went through a similar situation. Had two right breast masses one with questionable concerns Birads 4b and the other they felt leaned towards benign characteristics. They recommended to biopsy the one in question, and to my surprise biopsied both-which was fine with me.

Just received my results today-both are Fibroadenomas. I hope this is the same in your case! Please let us know-praying for benign results! xo

My doctor is also going to do biopsy for both the lumps.. it’s on 3rd of September. Will definitely post my results as soon as I get it.

I had the exact situation you are asking about. I had a spot in each breast in exactly the same place and they suspected before biopsy that it was something idiopathic to my breasts but biopsy revealed fibroadenoma in left breast and invasive micropapillary carcinoma in the right. The radiologist who did my ultrasound said if it weren’t for me having BRCA1 she would send me on my way without biopsy. I hope yours are both fibroadenomas.
