Bi-rads 5, waiting on biopsy results

New here, hope I’ve posted in the right place.

62yo, followed x10+ years by a great doc for left-sided DCIS, stage 0 with annual mammograms. No family BC history.

At annual screening the afternoon of 7/23 was called back in for a second set of views on the right, then a third, then an ultrasound, then the radiologist came in and redid the ultrasound, being especially aggressive in my armpit.

Radiologist was very upfront: “8mm mass at 2 o’clock, irregularly shaped and very suspicious for malignancy, but your lymph nodes seem fine.”

My doc said “This is small, it’ll neither be life threatening nor breast threatening.”

Scheduled for biopsy the first thing next morning—when I inquired about coming a different day when I wasn’t working, the coordinator got very serious—“No, you come back first thing tomorrow.”

8 core samples taken. Biopsy wasn’t bad, though I’m a bleeder. They were about to glue me when it finally stopped. So, I won’t hear until Monday or Tuesday about those results.

Right breastUS report says Bi-rads 5, 2 o’clock, 5cm from nipple, 8x6x8mm, irregular, spiculated, hypoechoic mass with hyperechoic halo and associated internal vascularity, morphologically normal lymph nodes.

So I wait, had a weekend away planned, so at least I have distractions.

Yuck, sorry you're in this position--I hope this weekend is truly delightful and you can escape thinking about your possible dx until next week.

Hi Jlimo - sorry that potential BC brings you here. My US report was also a Birads 5. People here told me that some come back as nothing but you don't usually see the poster come back and say anything. Unfortunately mine was BC. I hope you are one of the lucky ones! If not, there is a lot of wonderful support here to help navigate your way

The bad news is the 5 and the word "spiculated." The good news is that it's pretty tiny and should be easy to deal with, for you and your medical team.

I'm sorry you're going through this. Mine was Birads 5, but I already knew in my heart that it was cancer (no family history, healthy, clean living, good weight, just a God-whisper that the lump I could feel and was painful was cancer and I needed it checked out). During my biopsy I asked the radiologist what they thought they saw. She told me "we already have a cancer team ready for you."

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I am a year out of chemo and surgeries and radiation and more chemo and doing better than I thought I ever would! You've got this.

Had a consultation with my breast doc this AM. Invasive ductal CA, stage I. ER+/PR+, HER-2 - Looks like a lumpectomy and sentinel node for early September, followed by radiation. Very supportive office. Scheduled for MRI, EKG and labs, and genetic consult. Doc kept telling me I was actually pretty lucky, all things considered.

Working on wrapping my head around it.

Jlimo, all things considered that is a relatively easy to treat prognosis. It's going to be a real pain for awhile but it should all be in the rearview mirror pretty soon. Please let us know how we can help.

Hey Jlimo. So sorry to find you here. It's a lot to take in. I was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago and literally wandered around the house for the first few days. Couldn't sit still, couldn't believe it. It does get a little better, though. As others have said, it sounds like it's small and very treatable. Anyway, thinking of you. Hang in there.

I’m going through the same thing. I was just told yesterday that my mammogram came back with a BiRad 5 and scheduled for a core biopsy this week. Mine also said spiculated mass and had calcifications with a large area of distortion surrounding it. Waiting is torture. I keep googling every spare minute, and praying it’s wrong and is actually fat necrosis. Best of luck to you, and please update when you can!
