Radial Scar found during Core Biopsy, suggesting removal?
I thought is was odd during my biopsy that they took 12 samples instead of 3 as planned, but upon getting the results it makes sense.
Events leading up to getting the result (radial scar) was its own roller coaster!
Friday I was told by the womens imaging center all good, results benign. Yay! Celebrated with hubby all weekend. Yesterday got a call from doctor covering for my regular doctor while she is away on a mission trip. They said final pathology was not released yet, still pending??? That was late and all the other offices were closed, so they said they would figure out why and how I got results Friday when everyone reopened. Today at 11 they finally called back. Results are benign but they found "something else on one of the tests or procedures that may require another procedure". Only my doctor can discuss it. They wouldn't even tell me if it was related to the breast biopsy or one of the other test/procedures done recently.
Texted my dr to please get back to me when she is back. Bless her heart she texted right back saying she flies back tonight and will call me first thing tomorrow. About an hour later she texted saying they found a radial scar and are suggesting it be removed, she will call to discuss details in the morning.
So, after that long winded story:
is anyone familiar with radial scars? Why do they suggest removal if the core biopsy says benign?

Yes, complex sclerosing lesions, also known as radial scars, are usually removed because in a small percentage of them there are atypical cells or cancer found hiding in the same vicinity. Excisional biopsies are pretty easy. I thought mine was easier than my stereotactic ones.

I have only ever had an ultrasound guided biopsy. That was a bit tender for a couple days, but so much better than what I was expecting!

I was in and out and home in several hours since mine was done at an ambulatory surgical center. They told me to take the next day off, but I could have gone to work. You’ll have a lifting restriction for a little while. Mine was until my follow up. I had very little discomfort-a little sore and impressive bruising, but nothing that was any big deal. I took one pain pill, then a few doses of Aleve. The cold gel packs helped more than anything.

I had a radial scar removed about 20 yrs before I got breast cancer. Is the radial scar in the same location as your biopsy? I was told they had to remove it because there was a 50% chance itwas cancer. They removed it and it was benign

I don't know much yet. I assume it is in the same area that they biopsied. They said they were going to take 3 or 4 samples, they ended up taking 12 but didn't say why. Now I'm assuming it was bacause she saw something else or something more. Should know more tomorrow when my doctor calls. Thank you all

I am going through the same thing. I am having surgery to remove the radial scar in 2 weeks. I had my savi scout placed yesterday.

Hi Football Mom! They put a marker in mine when they did the biopsy last Tuesday. Still waiting for my doctor to call to find out the details for removal. So relieved she is back!

I had a marker placed during my biopsy as well. My radial scar is small and non-palpable so my surgeon had a savi locator inserted. When I go in for surgery they use a machine to locate the spot so th esurgeon knows just where to go. The locator was inserted using an ultrasound by a radiologist.
