Hi all! I am a newbie here, looking for some information or support. About 15 years ago i discovered a lump in my left breast and went through the mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, which showed it was a 1 cm fibroadenoma. Fast forward to now . . . I have had a mammogram every year for the last 9 years and they see that spot and confirm it hasn't grown. My last mammogram was September, everything looked the same. Four days ago, I felt another lump in that same breast, behind the first. Again, I had another mammogram and ultrasound. This time there are THREE other spots of 'concern' - ranging from 1cm to 3.5 cm. I have a biopsy scheduled on Monday but I am scared to death. Is it common to have fibroadenomas or cysts to grow that big that quickly? Thanks in advance for any info you can share . . .

I am sorry you are going through this. I personally know how hard it is. I had what was diagnosed by core needle biopsy as a fibroadenoma in my right breast. We watched it for several years with no growth. After a mammogram and ultrasound confirmed significant growth in November they decided to remove it. It turned out to be a hamartoma. Related to fibroadenoma but much more rare in breast tissue and sometimes prone to grow quickly. I am glad to have it out. They found another tumor in May and pathology was unclear about what kind of benign tumour it was so I am prepping for another surgery only 6 months later. This will be my 3rd. I am struggling with whether to begin refusing the recommendations of my Dr. (Whom I adore and trust) in relation to excisional surgery and mri.....or to gear up for a bilateral mastectomy.

It is hard to wait and wonder. It is also hard to recover from biopsies or surgeries only to have to do it all over again. Good luck to u on your journey.

Hello all! Dec/2018 3 biopsies on right breast. 2 fibroadenomas, Microcalcifications, and complex cyst aspiration. All benign. At 6 month follow up 7/9/19, one grew from 1.4cm to 1.8cm, another one from 1cm to 1.2cm x 1.3 cm, new mass noted 1cm in dimension, and my cyst is predominantly solid. They recommended bilateral MRI, as well as a surgical consultation. BI-RADS category 4. I am scheduled for MRI on the 6th, and surgeon on the 13th. My question is..... do fibroadenomas grow that fast? Is a cyst turning solid normal? Can a benign fibroadenoma become malignant? Thanks for your feed back. :)

    "do fibroadenomas grow that fast?"

    Yes they can.

"Is a cyst turning solid normal?"

If it started as a simple cyst, no they don't turn solid. They can gather debris and appear that way, or the solid part was not seen previously.

"Can a benign fibroadenoma become malignant?"

I have personally never seen that. A true fibroadenoma is not a premalignant lesion.
