I went in for my 1st appointment today for genetic consultation and testing today. I should get results back in 2-3 weeks. They strongly suspect that I will test positive for brca 2 since I have 2 cousins who tested positive. Plus, last year my dad was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. I really want the testing because I have 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I was and am glad that I'm able to get tested, but now I'm super anxious, nervous and scared about it. I'm glad I went to a genetic specialist so that they can help me deal with whatever the results end up being.

Are you having a panel run or just the BRCA? I feel that using the expertise of a genetic counselor is very important, as you said, to help cope with whatever might show up.

I hope that you were also given the suggestion to get all the life/disability/long term care insurance you need into place now, prior to getting results. Once your mutation status is known, those things could become more costly or simply unavailable...

I'm having the panel run. Thank-you for reminding me to get the life/disability/long term care insurance in place. They did tell me about that, but they told me so much it's hard to remember everything. The appointment was 2 hrs long. I have that type of insurance in place thru my work, but when we re-did our homeowners insurance this year, the agent brought up the life insurance. When I said we have it thru work he informed me that when I no longer work, (retire), that goes away. I never even thought of that. I will call Monday to make an appt. Thank-you again vlnph. I hope all is going well with you.
