US Biopsy caused Huge Hematoma

I just had a vacuum assisted Ultrasound guided biopsy done. The procedure itself was easy and I was happy that there wasn't really any pain. Unfortunately though it caused a huge hematoma. Several techs applied pressure for almost an hour, rotating out when they got tired. They were putting all their weight and strength into applying the pressure. It had doubled in size and they were trying to get it to stop. Eventually it did.

I was taped up for more compression and I needed to get a special bra from them as my sports bra wasn't snug enough. They couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Now I'm left to manage it at home and want to ask any advice anyone has for dealing with hematoma. They told me to keep ice on it and keep this compression tape on until tomorrow. Other than that, does anyone have any other advice, either immediate or long term, things I need to be aware of regarding hematoma in general.

Sherri sorry you had to go through that My needle biopsy left a large bruise, more than half my breast. But I also had two hematomas with my surgery which were so much more painful than just the bruising. Compression was the key for me and my surgeon drained the area but the pain lasted for a few weeks but I also had a lot of swelling from the surgery which put a lot of pressure on the area.. Hope yours resolve quickly and that your results come back good.

Thanks for the reply. Is a sports bra enough compression? They did send me home with tape but only said if I needed more in the next 24 hours or so. I have an appointment with my BS next week for the results so I'm sure she will give me more advice.

I had a HUGE hematoma after MRI biopsy. Be super careful to not bump it for a bit. It was the same for me, they couldn't stop the bleeding. Eventually they did, I went home and accidentally bumped it. That's when it formed. I called and they had me lay face down for an hour for pressure, after that sports bra and ice.

Ice ice ice, it's gonna hurt for a bit. If it starts bleeding again you will know, increased pain and pressure.

I had lumpectomy three days later, imagine that. The surgery was successful, but the hematoma was too solid to drain already. I had to do radiation with it still there. It took almost 3 months to go away completely, but eventually did. The bruising will go through many color changes.

Thanks for the reply. Yikes. Sounds very painful. I'm waiting for results to see what the next step will be. It's hard to imagine having to have the lumpectomy 3 days later. I've kept ice on almost constantly. There is a compression bandage between my skin and the ice pack so it isn't too cold. I'm keeping the compression tape and sports bra on and am going to keep the ice on as long as I can. I plan to sit on the couch and do as little as possible to avoid doing any damage.

Sherri000 hope it is starting to get better. My surgeon had wrapped me in an ace bandage and then had me wear a tight sports bra. I ended up getting a zip up compression bra which was easier for me to get on and off.

Thank you. It's still pretty large. But I've been icing it and compressing so it's probably just a wait and see at this point. I'm not as bruised as I expected but Im sure that is coming. I'm doing okay with things though, all things considered. I'm more cornered with how this affects future tests and how long it might take to go away. A zip bra sounds like a good idea. I have a front closure one but it is kind of challenging doing the little hooks.I may have to look into that zip kind.
