Hi all. I’m new to this. Not just breast cancer but to a discussion forum. I’m not on Facebook and am generally private person. However, from what I’ve read here, you are the only people who know what I’m going through. Question for anyone: I will be having a sentinel node injection prior to my lumpectomy. My doctor has indicated he won’t be using a numbing agent or anything for pain. Is this an option for me

No numbing agent, and when I was injected the nurse told me it will feel like a bee sting. That was pretty accurate for me and it was a fairly quick procedure. In and out within minutes.

I think there was some lidocaine in my injections. They did the radioactive tracer and the blue dye. It was really minor - like getting a flu shot just took a bit longer.

Thanks for your quick response. I will request that lidocaine be used.

Some facilities use a numbing agent for the SNB injections and others don't. You can request the lidocaine and maybe they will have it available, but if your facility is one that never uses it, they won't use it.

It does hurt, but only for a few seconds.

Honestly, I didn't think that would have needed a lidocaine injection, but you can definitely ask for it. The sentinel node injection didn't hurt more than any other shot (including a lidocaine shot). I am terrified of pain, but if I had to have that done, I wouldn't need to be numbed. It was pretty easy peasy.
