I am extremely upset & furious... just received a letter from the hospital... it states my Breast Surgeon ordered me as an "Outpatient"

Had a BMX on May 6th, Hospital told me to arrive 7:30am, right before surgery - surgeon told me I will be staying the night and will not be going home. Following day around 10pm I was discharged.

The Hospital is saying my insurance (Medicare) won't cover me as a "in patient".. I will be responsible for the bill. What do I do?

Have your surgeon submit a revised order to insurance - seems to be his/her error, and should just require an amended order. You should not be penalized for a paperwork screw-up, but also don't waste your recovery energy worrying about this - it will get straightened out. Often docs order 23 hour obs for this type of surgery, assuming you will be discharged within that 23 hour time period - thus technically “out-patient" but since you exceeded 24 hours you are considered in-patient. Try not to be upset or worried, but call your surgeon's insurance specialist and let them know.

    Thanks SpecialK

    Will call my BS tomorrow...

My doctor didn't write an order to admit me as an inpatient.
