Birads 3 Biopsy

My biopsy was Monday and I will be getting the results tomorrow. Just a little background info on what led me to this....about a month ago, I found a lump in my breast. My gyno thought it was a cyst and attempted to aspirate it. Only minimal fluid came out and it did not deflate like he had wanted. The fluid was sent off for testing. The results showed a few atypical cells in the background of the sample. My gyno then set me up for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound to be followed by a biopsy. The mammogram and ultrasound results showed two areas that were labeled as cysts (apparently one of these is a complex cyst- part fluid, part solid). I was given a Birads 3 (probably benign). The surgeon reviewed the findings and conducted his own ultrasound. He said that normally, with a Birads 3, he would recommend the 6 month follow up without the biopsy. However, because my prior fluid test came back with atypical cells, he said that "our hand is forced" into doing a biopsy at this point. My gyno agrees with the surgeon and states that he "doesn't like the word probably...he wants to know 100%". Has anyone else with Birads 3 been sent for biopsy by their doctors? I haven't been nervous until now, knowing that the results are tomorrow. From what I understand about Birads 3, 98% come back fine. Yet, I haven't heard of many people with Birads 3 being sent for a biopsy. If given the choice, I probably would have high-tailed it out of the office and not worried about it again for 6 months. At least tomorrow, I will know for sure.

Just wanted to post an update for anyone who may search for this topic in the future. My results came back benign. I will have a follow up in 6 months. My thoughts are with all of you ladies that are still waiting for answers. Positive vibes!

wonderful news! Thank you for the update and for sharing your experience.

I am also Birads 3 and waiting for my 6 month follow up ultrascan-it’s next week. I am feeling anxious already. My mass is tiny and non palpable ( don’t know what it is, possibly fibroadenoma or cyst)

    Take care
