Hi, I had an MRI on Friday That detected an irregular mass with irregular margins. Birads 4. I was sent for an ultrasound today and he said he disagreed with the irregular margins. I thought MRIs would show more than an ultrasound. I am scheduled for core needle on Monday but the conflicting reports are really bugging me.

Each screening modality "sees" things different, so it's very common to find inconsistencies in imaging between mammograms, ultrasounds and MRIs. It's nothing to be concerned about.

You mention that the MRI is assessed as a BIRADs 4. Since the ultrasound did see the lesion and since the biopsy is going ahead, I'd guess the ultrasound is a BIRADs 4 too. Sometimes BIRADs 4 is broken down into 4a, 4b, and 4c. If that had been done in your case, it could be that the MRI would have been a 4b (because of the mass appears irregular) whereas the ultrasound might be a 4a. On average, looking at all BIRADs 4 biopsies, about 80% turn out to be benign.

Don't worry about the reports. Ultimately, it's the biopsy results that count. Good luck! Hoping that you are in the 80% with benign results.
