Worried: Core Biopsy Scheduled
I went into today for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. The doctor told me it wasn’t a cyst but couldn’t say what it was. The area she’s concerned about is about 6 cm and she couldn’t tell me more. They also took pics of my lymph nodes and told me that’s measured regular size. So now I have to have a core biopsy and I can’t help but to be worried because no one is telling me anything just not to worry. What could this be? I’m trying to stay positive but she didn’t tell me anything that would make me feel better.

Cindy,
I'm in a similar boat to you ... mammo found a mass, had ultrasound, they know it's not a cyst, and a biopsy scheduled. I think lymph nodes are standard to take on the ultrasound, they did mine too. Doc didn't mention them when she talked to me for only a sec. I asked the tech, who said it was standard. They're not mentioned on my report at all.
What I can say is don't Google stuff. I've been doing exactly that the last few weeks, and it's fascinating and scary and I'm a mess at the moment. So yeah, don't dr. google. I'm walking proof that's a bad idea.
When is the biopsy scheduled for? My sense is that they often schedule these to make absolutely sure it's not something, and people keep telling me the majority come back benign. I'm trying to hope.

They are calling to schedule it tomorrow. The doctor didn’t say much. She said it wasn’t a cyst but I’m in the gray area where she can’t say what it is. And told me not to worry but what doctor ever tells you to worry.
I pray your results show you’re all clear.

Hi Cindy, and welcome to Breastcancer.org,
We are so sorry you're here and worrying, but just know we're all here for you while you wait and see. We can tell you that there could me many benign causes for what the doctor is seeing, but only a biopsy will be able to tell you what it is. Keep in mind that in the US, 80% of lumps that are biopsied are benign -- so try to remain positive and keep yourself busy until you have more answers.
Keep us posted with what you find out -- we're thinking of you!

Thanks! I’m trying to stay positive. I just wish she would have given me more information.

You're entitled to a copy of your reports. I had a bad experience with a very unhelpful radiologist at the ultrasound. I went the next day and got a copy of the report.
-
Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I go in for my diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound tomorrow.....followed the next day by a biopsy. Positive thoughts!
-
Thanks. Praying yours turns out alright. Apparently my big sister had this done a few years and everything turned out ok.
-
Ok so had biopsy. Doctor who performed it just called and said the the pathologist said it was benign but she wants me to have it removed because she thought from the look of it it was a radial scar or cancer and the the pathology report doesn’t say it’s either. I’m so irritated! I feel like I’m just going in circles. She wants me to talk to the breast surgeon and my sister wants me to get a second opinion because she thinks they don’t know what they’re doing. So I’m going to talk to the surgeon and get a second opinion. Oh, as it turns out, it’s the size of an English pea. So very small area but still. Will keep you updatwd

Cindy, i think you're wise to see what the BS has to say AND get a second opinion. When I was going through my active cancer phase, a second opinion made a huge difference in my options. The first MO was very laid back and really didn't take my cancer too seriously. My cancer was small, but was ER+PR-, a somewhat more aggressive diagnosisi. I had done my homework and pretty much knew what I needed. I sought out a 2nd opinion. Without telling that MO my thoughts on the situation, her plan lined up with what I already had researched. I went from a very laid back radiation+LX+watchful-waiting plan to a more aggressive chemo+BMX-take-no-prisoners plan. I have no regrets. Well, one regret--I wish I had gotten a 2nd opinion on the PS. I let myself get pushed along into surgery without really knowing all my options--the results were disasterous. Two years, and much heartbreak, later, I went to NOLA for DIEP reconstruction and now I have nice, soft, pretty breasts again.

It is not uncommon for biopsy results to be discordant with imaging, and when they are the standard of care is excising the area. They are being thorough and doing what they are supposed to, but a second opinion is always good.
-
Thanks. I’m not sure what’s going on. I prayed the biopsy would clear this up but now I’m looking atsurgery and nothing or surgery and radiation. Ugh.
-
Cindy, you are in that special hell where you have a little bit of scary information, but no answers and no plan. To me, this was absolutely the worst part. Finding out I definitely had cancer, even finding out I needed chemo didn't scare me as much as the Not Knowing. This will all settle out, one way or the other. Until then, try to be kind to yourself and know that there are a lot of women here who have your back (and a few men too!)

Thank you

so I met with the director and he explained things and said why he doesn’t think it’s cancer he of course doesn’t know. So I’m having the pea sized mass that’s giving me grief removed on the 10th and I’ll know more. Thanks for the support. Will keep you all updated.
