I'M BEING SENT TO A SURGEON BEFORE HAVING A BIOPSY

I went for my scheduled mammogram and was called back to have more images done. After the second mammogram they sent me for ultrasound. Two different masses were found. One on the mammogram and one on the ultrasound. They could not confirm if they were the same mass or two different ones. I now need to have a sterotactic biopsy and a ultrasound biopsy done.

What confuses me is that my GYN says I need to see a surgeon before i can have the biopsy done. This surgeon is not doing the biopsy so why would I need to see surgeon first?

Technically, there is no reason. All the breast surgeons I have worked with had busy practices and didnt want to see the patient unless they already had a positive biopsy. No point in seeing someone who winds up with a benign lump that does not need to be removed.

Some places may have an agreement to have the surgeon see everyone going for a biopsy, for other reasons.

    CDavis206,

My understanding of this is that the surgeon has to sign off on the biopsy as some insurance will consider it an outpatient surgical procedure. I know that is what mine did. They also had the surgeon call me with the results of the biopsy. This could just be the way your hospital/insurance/ and doctors work. best wishes.

I was sent to a surgeon when my mammogram was abnormal for the biopsy, the surgeon actually performed the ultra sound biopsy and called me with the results. His office contacted the oncologist and made the appointment.

I hope this helps a little, I know how sureal and scary a time this is. Hang in there, you are not alone.

am confused too because my mom surgeon did her biopsy. But you said he won’t so not sure why they send you that direction.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I keep telling myself that this is nothing. That it's just a routine procedure. But then there's that voice that keeps asking questions. What if's.

I was also sent to a surgeon first. He reviewed by mammograms, ulrasound and MRI; also did a breast exam. And then he sent me for my biopsy. The surgeon may be able to better determine if a biopsy is needed? I don't know.
