Is radiation and hormone therapy necessary after lumpectomy

I was just diagnosed with non-invasive DCIS low grade. I met with the surgeon today and am scheduled for a lumpectomy on May 8th. The doctor said it was diagnosed so early and it's a small area that there is very little to be concerned about. They will not be removing any lymph nodes either. However he says I will be referred to have radiation and hormone therapy. If it's such a low risk do i really need to suffer the side effects of these treatments?

I'd suggest that you may want to repost this in the DCIS forum. Most of the people reading here will be those with an invasive cancer diagnosis, who may not understand the differences vs. DCIS. The risks with an invasive cancer diagnosis are different/greater, which can drive the decision on rads and hormone therapy.

To get you started, here is a link to a current discussion thread in the DCIS forum on this very topic:

No need to apologize, and nothing wrong with posting in this forum.

I just think that in the DCIS forum you have a better chance of getting answers that are more applicable to your diagnosis. Passing on rads and/or hormone therapy, while not usual, is done more often by those with DCIS than those with invasive cancer.
