BRIP1 Gene mutation

hi, this question is for my mom, she recently took a gene test (at age 57) and found she had a BRIP1 gene mutation, from m understanding, it is ASSOCIATED with BRCA1 but is not as dangerous. BRIP1 gives you a moderate risk of ovarian cancer and possibly breast cancer. She has been talking with a doctor to remove her breast and overies but she’s isn’t sure how far she wants to go with this.

My mom is extremely healthy, as in she eats right and works out 24/7, there are only 2 people on her side with breast cancer, one stage 0 at 60 and the other passed away at age 40 (however she had a lot of hormone injections, so that was most likely the cause).

So my question is, is there anyone with the BRIP1 gene or knows anything about it with info I can give my mom? Every time we look it up it doesn’t give us much information. She thinks BRIP1 is the same as BRCA1, but I researched it and I do not think that’s the case.... thanks.

I am assuming she is post menopausal. She may want have risk reducing surgery to remove ovaries and tubes as ovarian cancer is typically found late stage. The monitoring is not very good. If she is post menopausal it should not be a big difference in her life. I am having the surgery along with hysterectomy soon due to a mutation in a different gene.

On a side note, I hope you will have genetic testing as well! If you are positive for the mutation you may have different and earlier screenings than the normal recommendations.

If the doctor she has been talking with is not a geneticist that is where she needs to start and look to guidance from. Who did the testing, or did she do it on her own
