DX with DCIS in both breasts at the same time

I was recently diagnosed with DCIS in the right breast and then after doing an MRI to determine size they found something in the left breast. After a biopsby I was also diagnosed with DCIS 0.2 cm in the left breast also. Doctor wants to do a bi-lat MX. This seems so drastic to me for a non invasive cancer so small. The size of the DCIS on the right breast is 3.6 cm. I am in the process of getting a second opinion. Has anyone else had DCIS in both breast at the same time?

I have not, no. I did have IDC in both breasts at the same time, as well as DCIS in the left and LCIS in the right. The surgery decision is yours, but unless you have extensive DCIS I agree that a BMX sounds drastic if you're not already inclined to go that direction. If I had the choice I would have done a lumpectomy, myself.

Thanks for sharing that. I would rather do a lumpectomy and radiation. I am meeting with my surgeon on Monday and will be asking my questions as to why he wants to go in that direction and looking forward to a second opinion. I hope you are doing well now.

when I asked my medical oncologist about the possibility of getting DCIS is my other breast, he said that both breasts were subject to the same environment, so it was certainly possible. I am glad that you are asking your surgeon why a double mastectomy is being recommended and also that you are getting a second opinion.

I appreciate your input on this. It’s all so scary and crazy I am sure for all of us

I had DCIS in both breasts one year apart. The first (left) was high grade, 6cm on MRI, and 2 surgeons recommend unilateral MX which I had. Next year, the right DCIS was only 2cm and, in my situation, the surgeon recommended another MX. I’m glad to have avoided radiation and anti homornal drugs. EMD13, Do you know if your is high or low grade DCIS? I do remember feelings of this is drastic surgery for stage 0, but now I do feel good about having 2 MX and reconstruction.

Both are high grade. Didn’t you get two opinions also on your 2nd MX

EMD13. No, I didn't get another opinion on the 2nd MX. The surgeon did say lumpectomy was an option with the2nd DCIS, but by that time,I wanted another MX to avoid anti hormonal drugs and for less worry. (And matching is better).

That makes a lot of sense
