Ok, I don't know where to ask this. If this is the right group? I had breast cancer. Had the mastectomy, chemo and herceptin. I am post treatments now for 1 1/2 years. Pls don't think this is a dumb question.

I obviously double think everything I do now after having Stage 1 BC and wouldn't go into a smoke filled room to sit or sit anywhere with chemical fumes coming from something...probably even non BC ppl wouldn't either.

I was offered a part time school bus driver job. I have done this before. But, the buses can be old and can have metal smells, etc. I am afraid this could be harmful to me, and even bring on BC again. It can't be healthy. I am thinking of not taking it. I need the work. Any comments on this.

I think stress can bring on breast cancer.

I think OSHA, Occupational Safety Hazard Association (federal pgm), wouldn't allow harmful toxins in the air on a school bus - not so much for you, but for the kids. But if you have fears, look for something else.

In what environment would you feel safer working? I do think most work environments have downsides (sitting too much, being exposed to VOCs from rugs and furniture, being near construction, etc.) - you just have to consider what you're comfortable with.

I was looking for a new place to live recently, and refused to live in a place near high voltage power lines (what can I say, I'm still a bit jumpy :). And then I saw they built the new elementary school right next to them.

Yes, I have to be comfortable with where I work. So, I did not take the job. If it worries me that much, then it is not a good fit for me. I probably would have taken it, if I hadn't had breast cancer.

School buses where the bus driver sits do have old heaters etc. It comes right out in your face as your driving. It is full of dirty dust and I don't think good. I just double think everything now. I know, which job doesn't have something? Well, nothing is perfect but I am going to wait for a clean office job or retail inside. It is just really hard to find employment where I am living right now. So, I was willing to take something that had me worried. And I am not putting that profession down. I enjoyed driving when I did. The little kids were fun.

No one knows what really causes breast cancer. I did all the right things. Exercised, maintained a good weight, had a decent diet, got a good amount of rest. Still got it. It terrifies me to do anything that might contribute to a recurrence.
