if you like walnuts

and if you don't, you might want to give them another try!
-
Interesting!
-
hmmmm guess I'll be getting walnuts tomorrow when I grocery shop
-
Good thing I have been eating these daily for a while now! I started because my Grandpa always advocated for them. Thanks, Grandpa! By the way, he was a huge believer in eating cabbage daily (check) and Vitamin C (check) The only thing he advocated that I can't quite get into is sardines. yuck
-
Remember to take this study with a grain of salt. Funded by the walnut industry. Still, it is food eaten by the Blue-Zone, long-lived people.
Walnuts are my least favorite nut. Sardines...worship them!
-
So funny, I just started eating walnuts daily! But for a different reason: walnuts make a bigger and better difference to gut bacteria/microflora than probiotics. Amazing, and the effect is quite specific to walnuts:

For really good salted roasted walnuts, soak in a brine of 14 cup kosher salr in a quart of warm water for about six hours, then bake on low, 225 degrees, for about two hours, stirring or shaking pan a time or two. Really nice and crunchy, and only mildly salty.
-
Interesting but n=5 and sponsored by the walnut industry
Cant harm for sure.
Melissa, that recipe sounds delicious. Do you let them dry after soaking or just send them directly to the oven?
-
LaughingGull, directly into the oven. They are very crispy/crunchy done this way. Put them on parchment paper on the baking sheet

Thanks for this piece! I adore walnuts but can only eat a few a day because they cause raised bumps on my tongue (as do to many strawberries or tomatoes) - something I developed later in life. 2 ounces of nuts of any kind is a LOT of nuts for someone small like me, too, so I'll continue with my 1 oz. per day and make sure that I include walnuts in the mix.
-
MelissaDallas, so you're saying 14 cups kosher salt in 1 qt of warm water?
-
Four tablespoons kosher salt in four cups water
-
I love them chewy. I just soak them in water and eat them. Munch on these all day right out of my desk drawer. Heard about this from Dr Oz. He is not my favourite but I like soggy, chewy walnuts. Lo
-
oh, and I love sardines and cabbage. I think I love your grandpa.
-
HaHa TB90! Would you love him even more if you knew he also liked a shot of whiskey every night before bed and lived to the ripe old age of 97? His brother outlasted him though, lived to 102. Must have been the cabbage because they both smoked like fiends. Maybe I should start a thread on "Lester's longevity tips"
I did read somewhere that you should soak the walnuts for some reason. Don't believe Gramps ever did though.
-
Some people don't love the bitterness of a walnut. Walnuts lose the bitterness if you cook them gently. Put a bit of butter in a sauce pan and brown crumbled walnuts on med heat. I love to throw them in salads but do prefer them lightly toasted..
-
Glad to hear of this study, especially since I love raw walnuts. I usually eat them everyday. I was on a diet last month and cut them out but after two weeks started to get nervous that while I was losing weight I might be screwing up my cancer treatment. Glad to know I wasn't crazy. So walnuts it is. I read another study that showed people with exceptional longevity eat three portions of nuts a day.
