Prednisone

I was given prednisone 2 tabs 20mgs each x2 a day so I can get my platelets back to normal. I have been taking for a 3 days now. Last night, I got maybe a total of 3 hrs sleep. Anyone know if I can take anything to get some much needed sleep.

Prior to my retirement from work as a pharmacist, I would dispense oral steroids with the caution to take them early in the day with food since they are known to disrupt sleep. So, with breakfast and lunch or by late afternoon with a snack.

A 40mg dose twice daily is pretty hefty - how long will you be on it?

When I had dexamethasone, lorazepam 0.5mg (generic Ativan) at bedtime was helpful. Call your clinic to describe the situation and ask for a prescription. Diphenhydramine/Benadryl is the active ingredient in most over the counter formulas but it gives many people an unpleasant dry mouth and other side effects.
