Lumpectomy at 31.. Now waiting for results

Hi All,

I finally had my lumpectomy (actually 'quadrantectomy') last Monday, so now I'm waiting for the biopsy results.

This whole thing started by the end of last year; as I live overseas, and I haven't been paying too much attention to check ups, since.. "I'm only 31, what can go wrong?" (used to think this way.. never again), my sister 'surprised' me w/medical appointments once I went back home for holidays.

So fast forward a few months, and after a repeat US, a mammogram, and a few other consults, they told me they had found a hypoechoic vascular mass on my left breast (complex cyst - BIRADS 4).

As the specialists' believe the mass to be a bening tumor called intraductal papilloma, it was recommended to have surgery to remove it, rather than going through core needle biopsy and then surgery afterwards, since they explained me that these type of lesions would have to be removed anyway. I obviously agreed and opted to have it removed now.

So now I'm just waiting for the results to come through.. I'm honestly not scared; they told me there's an 85% chance that this is a papilloma and a 15% chance that is the 'other kind', so I'm just being realistic and hoping for the best. I'm slightly worried, as I had no symptoms whatsoever (no nipple discharge, nor palpable mass), but I trust their assessment.

Anyway, just thought it made sense to create a thread about my situation, since I've been lurking this website for a while already, and it's helped me a lot so far..

I had an excisional biopsy at age 30 , which given my breast size then, amounted to a lumpectomy. It was super stressful but looking back (I am now 55), I am glad the entire mass was removed instead of evaluated with a needle or punch biopsy. Especially since the mass had some characteristics that were unique in my surgeon's view. Luckily, that mass was benign for me and I hope the same outcome for you. Take it easy as you recover and I hope you get word soon.

Just wanted to let you know that I finally got my results today, and that the mass was beningn!!

I'm still a bit in shock, since I was honestly thinking the worst, so it took me a while to understand what the surgeon was saying.. But there's nothing to worry about anymore.

So glad your results were benign! How does the quandrantecomy look? I am scheduled for one on the 18th of this month. I hope it is the correct decision (over mastectomy). Do you feel it looks okay?

It looks great actually; though it does depend a lot on the area where the lump is located at. Mine was located around the areola, so the surgeons were very happy since they said it would look very aesthetic afterwards, and they were right - I have a minor scar at the moment, and just had to have one tiny stitch, which they already removed. I don't see any noticeable differences between my breasts nor notice anything odd.

I was concerned about losing sensation or having numbness, but none of that happened. It honestly looks as if I have had a small cut around my areola, not a breast conserving surgery! So I'm very pleased with that At the moment I'm using a prescription gel for the scar 3 times a day (Contractubex), and I'm just massaging the area above, as the surgeon said that would improve blood flow (there was a little bit of liquid accumulated around the wound, but no drainage was necessary).

By the way, overall the lump was ~ 7mm big, but the mass removed was ~ 5cm in diameter (surgeon said she wanted to have very clean margins, just in case results came back malignant).
