I was on the keto diet through my whole treatment. I'm still on it. I do a healthy version with lots of vegetables and happy well raised meat and dairy.

    That’s great rachelcarter35

So you had the Keto drug and think it’s safe. Thanks alot for answering. I was afraid because of conflicting opinions on ketogenic diets

I have been on a keto diet for years and years. I also do the healthy version.

I don't use any kind of keto drug. I'm not even sure what it is.

The way I understand it, ketosis occurs because you have insufficient carbohydrates and your body must resort to metabolising fat as an energy source. The ketones produced are capable of fueling the brain when it lack carbohydrates. So if you think of it in terms of your nutritional state driving the production of ketones, and not in terms of the ketones themselves having any benefit aside from fueling the brain, then you see what drives fat burning and ketone production. I'm not sure that any drug could safely promote ketone production and fat loss in the presence of sufficient intake of carbohydrates. Nor would consuming ketone themselves have any benefit in terms of fat loss. Or why a drug would be needed if you have a low enough carbohydrate intake. Not that I am in any way promoting the ketone diet, but the reason it works is because of a change in diet that limits carbohydrate intake.

Thanks Husband11 and IamElaine for your input

There are conflicting reports onthe bebefit of the Keto diet and there is no information on the pills and cancer growth, so maybe it's not yet safe to try these pills with breast cancer.

I wouldn't take it. I feel great eating keto (healthy version). I eat plenty of vegetables and no processed meat. Most of my fat comes from good oils, 'happy meat', nuts and avocados. I eat a little dairy but not a lot.

They are various "supplements" sold at drug and health stores for people on keto diets, just like all the other OTC diet pills and supps. I don't believe they are targeted at cancer patients.

Hi IAmElaine. I keep checking in on you in particular to be my example of what to hope for. Only got my diagnosis March 6, saw oncologist and whole breast cancer team yesterday in a 2 3/4 hours whirlwind of revolving medical people, forms, prodding. Could start my chemo anytime now -- certainly before two weeks are out. I am Her2 pos. Somehow I went from not feeling anything lathering up in the shower to "WTF?!" there's a HUGE lump. I was terrified it was the size of a hard boiled egg. It is 5 cm but rolls around like a marble so it is not attached to the chest wall. It is considered big and aggressive (but I am small and equally aggressive) I had some cancer cells showing up in the core biospies of the underarm lymphnode but so far four doctors cannot palpate the node, so I guess that is a somewhat positive sign.

Now I am terrifed of all the PET scans, heart ultrasound etc etc coming up. What if what if what if.....

I hope that the people who used to post are not anymore because they are thriving and too busy living full lives. So please keep posting!!

The drug is for weight loss and since patients on hormonal treatment gain weight, I thought it could help but am afraid of its unknown effect on the cancer.

    Dear Elderberry,

Many patients stop posting because they're back to their lives. Her2 positive is no longer a problem after Herceptin and other target treatment. You'll be okay. Stay strong and eat healthy and ask whenever you have a question.

Elderberry, you might want to check in with the Triple Positive board (It is under HER2). You will find lots of information and its a really nice, knowledgeable group, I know you are feeling...it was almost 10 years ago that I was going through this experience. You are in the most stressful part of this journey and it will get much better once you have your treatment plan in order. So please join us on the Triple Positive group!.
