Hi all,

I've been lurking for awhile with only one post, but thought perhaps I might find some good advice here from all you experts!

I've had one problem after another following my double mastectomy in January. There was some necrosis, on both sides, so I had a surgery to remove that. Then, about two weeks later, after my first fill, I became very sick and my right breast started leaking (gross!) and turned red. I went in the next day and long story short, I was in the hospital for 4 days on IV antibiotics and they took out the right TE and diagnosed me with MRSA.

I'm diabetic but in very good control and I fee like I'm a pretty healthy person, healthy weight, eat well, etc., but the doctor said it's a risk factor.

At this point they have me on a concoction of oral antibiotics. My PS said we should wait until summer to replace the TE, so the infection can be all healed and since I'm a teacher that would minimize my exposure to all the school germs. The left one is still in.

I'm petrified it's going to come back. I find I check myself every few hours to see if that breast is red again. Has anyone dealt with something like this? Or another infection? I never once thought any of this could happen.

I'm so bummed...

Romay - I'm so sorry for what's happened. I had a similar yet different experience a few months after my DIEP surgery (no TE or implant). Somehow I ended up with antibiotic-resistant klebsiella (yeah - I'd never heard of it before, either). Hospitalization with multiple antibiotics, then home with IV antibiotics for another two weeks. Like you I’ve been so afraid of reinfection I haven’t yet had my stage 2 surgery. My PS doesn’t seem to think it’s a big deal, and the ID doctor doesn’t believe I’m colonized so I should have the surgery. But I get what you mean; I’m so afraid of tempting fate and having it come back again, it was life-threatening and it scares me. I’m sure I’ll be fine - as will you.good luck

I'm so sorry. I had MSSA infection in my chemo port just a year ago. Started out as flu symptoms and treated as such by my

PCP. Ended up in ER with severe sepsis and two blood clots caused by infection. Hospitalized for 9 days, port removed, pic line put in, six weeks of IV antibiotics three times a day and 90 days of daily blood thinner shots for the clots. Needless to say my fear of future infection is through the roof. I had a revision surgery in Oct and my plastic surgeon and hospital staff were very aware of my fears and went above and beyond to make sure they told me all they were doing to prevent infection with IV' antibiotics during surgery and a course of preventative antibiotics for 7 days after. I feel like I will have this fear forever. The infection was brutal.
