Hi dianalynn I am fast approaching four years on letrozole, I was diagnosed in July 2015. Actually 10 months on Arimidex and the last two years 10 months on letrozole. I have had sores in my mouth, lips, gums and roof of the mouth, and a sore throat for the entire time I have been on an aromatase inhibitor. It is extremely unpleasant and hard to deal with on a daily basis! After much research, because I could get no information from my oncologist, I have determined that it is in fact mucositis. This coupled with the constant upset stomach, which is definitely caused by the letrozole, and the reflux often times I have been reduced to tears. The burning mouth syndrome that I experience, Mucositis, is apparently a side effect of no estrogen! It’s apparently very common in menopausal women. As much as 30% of menopausal women experience this side effect. I had already finished menopause when I was diagnosed with breast cancer but my oncologist refers to my time on aromatase inhibitor’s as my second menopause as the drug affectively eliminates all estrogen in my body. Or at least without aromatase prevents me from using it. One particular report I read said that after the menopause things do settle down so I am hopeful, praying actually, that when I finish this drug this dreadful side effects will go away!!

I hope you get this response and it helps, feel free to reach out to me if you want to chat.

thank you so very much! They put me on an rx called protonix and it helped quite a bit. The particular chemo I was on that gave me the mucussitus is called Navelbine.. Unfortunately I found out that the drug is no longer working. However, since I stop this particular chemo I have zero mucositis. I’m not sure what my next treatment will be but let’s hope for the best. Again, THANK YOU so very much for reaching out, it means a lot!
