Not sure what to think

Hi everyone,

I am feeling a little lost right now. I noticed a lump in my breast a couple of weeks ago. I saw my doctor on Monday and he said it is about 2cm and movable, but that he didn't feel any lymph nodes. I had an ultrasound today and had the results within a couple of hours. The receptionist said it was a fibroadenoma, but they had scheduled a mammogram for the beginning of April to be sure.

I guess I am confused because I thought an ultrasound was the best way to check for a fibroadenoma. If they think it is that, what will they be looking for in a mammogram?

My doctor really didn't explain the process to me so I am not really sure what to expect and am feeling a little worried now that they want me to have a mammogram.

Sometimes they will utilize a different type of imaging just to get another point of view/different information. A mammogram might show calcifications which might indicate your fibroadema is associated with DCIS. I wouldn't be too alarmed.

Fibroadenomas are benign and are not "associated" with DCIS. We would just be guessing as to why you were referred for a mammogram after the benign-appearing ultrasound.

Time_hope, any time you don't understand what your doctor is doing or why, you should make them explain again until you do. Call the office back and tell them you need to understand their reasoning and what the referral is for. It is also helpful to always request a copy of your radiology reports and breast imaging and keep them for future reference. The answer to why you are being referred for a mammogram is probably in the ultrasound radiology report.

Crap..... sorry. I just came across my pathology report the other day and was intrigued by the things I hadn't noticed/read in it first after surgery.

My DCIS breast had fibrocystic change and Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia.....
it was my healthy breast removed prophylactically that had fibrocystic change and fibroadenoma.

I got these two mixed up.... did not mean to cause worry

I think I'd also be worried about a doctor who lets the receptionist give the patient the test results. Just my opinion, but that sounds unprofessional.
