New lump in breast

My Dr. just found a lump in my right breast in the inside right by my nipple and said it’s about 4cm by 5cm in size. She wouldn’t say any opinions about what she thought it was. She scheduled my mammogram and ultrasound for the 14th of March because that’s the soonest they could get me in.

I guess my question is, is that a good sign they aren’t rushing it? Or is that normal? Also I feel like if it were something serious it probably wouldn’t be as big so fast or is that just wishful thinking? Also, does location of lumps matter?

I’m only 30, my grandmother had breast cancer but I was too young to know many details and she has since passed but that’s my only history for that. I feel quite dumb for not doing exams like I should have been. Any information or advice would be great!

Hi Mamaofthree, welcome to our community! We're sorry you're experiencing this worry, but try to remember that the majority of breast lumps turn out to be benign. The scheduling is really dependent on the office you'll be seen in, unfortunately. But we're glad your doctor is being proactive and sending you for further testing to see what you're dealing with! I had to wait one month before I could get a mammogram. I don't think it matters. However, if the results of your mammogram warrant a biopsy but they schedule the biopsy 2-3 weeks later, that means you are probably less on the urgent side of things. Try not to read into too many details like that.

Location of lumps have no indication as to what stage a cancer could be. It could effect the cosmetic outcomes of a lumpectomy if you have to have the lump removed.

Thanks for responding! This board is full of such supportive and knowledgeable people.I didn’t think waiting would bother me and then it crept in.

I guess I was hoping since it’s on the inside of my breast not the outside that the chances of it being something were even more slim than the 1 in 8.

I feel pretty good about my odds but my poor husband is stressed. He thinks that the odds aren’t in my great. I guess it’s hard because he is a firefighter/paramedic and sees worst case scenarios all the time. I wish I could make him more calm about it all.
