Newly DIagnosed and was Lumpectomy now Mastectomy.

Hi everyone. Thank you for offering such a warm, wonderful place to come for support and information. I'm struggling, maybe in denial as yesterday I was scheduled for a lumpectomy and it changed in the surgeon's office. The biopsy Feb. 1 showed IDC left breast. We scheduled the surgery for Wed. Feb. 27 followed by rads. Well I mentioned to the surgeon that I wondered what the future looked like due to very dense breasts and imaging problems. She decided on breast MRI bilaterally. As I was leaving her office yesterday (Monday) she stopped me to tell me the results finally came in and a second area, in the same breast, showed possibly positive also. I had about two minutes to absorb this and made a decision to do a mastectomy instead of waiting, biopsy, more waiting and my mind could not wrap around any further delay. So tomorrow is my day. I don't want to second guess this, just need some support. I have MS and that isn't helping. I like to tease and say when I'm flustered, "My brain, she are no good". lol

Hi Irishlove!

I’m very sorry that you have to be here. You’ll get a lot of support! I did something similar to you, when my MRI showed additional suspicious areas, I decided not to wait for biopsy and actually chose a bilateral mastectomy. I wish you all the best with your surgery. Mine was much easier than I had expected. I hope that yours will be too.

I had a multi-focal situation and worried about getting good margins, and my breasts weren't large enough to take so much tissue anwyay. I was happy to be able to forego radiation and hormonal drugs. What would be left of my breast would be unrecognizable and was not worth saving. Mastectomy is a good choice in this situation. It's too bad you don't have much time for this all to sink in!

I hope your surgery goes well. You will feel much better when you wake up from it and are on the other side!

hello sweetie I was making wedding plans for our 2nd marriages when found lump didn't want to go into new marriage with breast removed so thought about lumpectomy But my wonderful now husband said do what you think will be best I want you don't care bout breast. So I decided on L mastectomy. Praise God this was 25yrs this yr. msphil idc stage2 0\3 nodes 3mo chemo before and after Lmast got married then 7wks rads and 5yrs on Tamoxifen

Having a mastectomy might mean no radiation, but I don't think it affects if you'll need an anti-hormonal or not.

Thank you all so very much for your welcoming support. It is so very much appreciated. Surgery went well. Now I don't want to jinx anything, but so far so good. Strange when I looked down at myself it didn't shock me. Might be because I still wear a training bra at the age of 63. lol. Hey it paid off being flat chested after all. lol

I'm home and happy to be in my own bed. From what I've been able to read and absorb, it will be 2 weeks for the path report. She also said the second area of concern could well have been a false positive on the MRI. That's interesting. I had thought MRI's are the best screening available. Wonder where the 3D mammo's rate in the screening process.

glad you are finished with the surgery, Irishlove. It’s a huge step to get through. Hopefully the pathology will come back sooner than later. Focus on healing and taking care of yourself for now.

Good Irishlove that the surgery went well. The worse time for me was from the time of the biopsy diagnosis to the actual date of surgery. I was very frustrated with nothing being done, from my point of view, to deal with the condition. Once the surgery was scheduled, which was a few days before the surgery, then I felt that I was on the way to fighting and getting rid of the cancer.
