So our health insurance sucks. It's a high deductible plan, but really, who plans on getting sick? My surgery is literally two weeks from today and the plastic surgeons office just called and my out of pocket portion will be $3,000. And then, she asked what I would comfortable paying up front. Ugh!! I was doing ok, but man...… not many have an extra $3K just lying around. I'm just starting to feel VERY overwhelmed now. Part of me wants to say screw you! Lol! I don't need reconstructive! But my husband will say otherwise. I HATE breast cancer and it just SUCKS!!

Hey I hear you, Mom!  In a similar boat where we have to come up with substantial out of pocket money before I hit my annual maximum.  It's stressful managing the finances on top of, you know, trying to save your own life!

My cancer team gave me information on where to get financial, emotional and other assistance. I'm in the US.

www.cancer.org has a lot of info at their site. They have cancer information specialists available 24/7 1-800-227-2345

Another resource they told me about is CancerCare 800-813-4673 www.cancercare.org They offer a lot of services including counseling, education and practical and financial help. I believe their services are free of charge.

If you can't get financial help, ask if you could pay the bill on time.

Yes, it does suck! Adding financial stress to the situation is just not fair.

Most hospitals will work with you on a payment plan. I was surprised at how both hospitals I used offered to give me a year to pay the balances. Sure, I’m still paying the same amount but it hurts a lot less!!!
