Breast specialist
Has anyone seen a breast specialist after an ultrasound that resulted in a Birads 4 with a recommendation for a biopsy then have the specialist decide not to do a biopsy? I have a mammogram 3 months ago and got called back for a spot compression and ultrasound. After the ultrasound the doctor came in and looked himself and said he suggested a biopsy ” just to be safe”. The masses were a little suspicious one is vascular the other has micro calcifications both are Hypoechoic and weren’t there on my last mammogram 8 years ago . Of course I’ve googled and looked at the list of good/bad terms Djmammo has posted and it doesn’t seem very alarming at all. My primary doctor is of the opinion that the specialist will want to remove the masses due to my mother currently fighting her second round of breast cancer. I’m just so tired of the waiting game. It’s been dragging on for three months and I feel like if it was a big deal they would have had more urgency. I go to the specialist tomorrow and I guess I’m just trying to mentally prepare for what she’s going to suggest. It’s been so long since the first mammogram that I keep going back and forth in my head about whether she’ll just tell me it’s no big deal, go home And we can recheck later or want to do a biopsy. I just don’t want to be over dramatic going to a specialist to be told it’s no big deal.

I didn't see the breast specialist until after a discordant benign ultrasound-guided biopsy. My ultrasound was also birads 4. She gave me the option of an MRI or excisional biopsy. My primary had already ordered the MRI, so I scheduled the excisional biopsy with the breast specialist that day (which is tomorrow). MRI supports the possibility that the mass was most likely missed, so I'm glad that I went ahead with getting the excisional biopsy on the books ahead of getting the MRI results. If your primary referred you, I don't think that it's being over dramatic to at least find out what the mass is and then go from there.

I always think it is a good idea to get a second opinion. We have a lot at stake to trust one person. In 2007 I was diagnosed with "architectural distortion". I thought what in the world is that? I brought everything over to another breast surgeon, who had an excellent reputation. He diagnosed me very differently and I did need surgery. Now it's 11 years and counting. For me it's better to know for sure, if possible. I can deal with the facts, but vague answers are very hard to take. I'm also a Christian and depend on my Savior for grace to deal with the uncertainties of life. I hope all goes well with you.

Oh we both have appointments tomorrow with a breast specialist! It sounds like your primary is similar to mine, better to go to a specialist and find out instead of not. I think I’m just trying to wrap my head around all of it without thinking the worst but still trying to be realistic about the possible outcome. The waiting is just so difficult. I just want to know what’s going on right now and I know it doesn’t work like that at all. I’ll keep you in my thoughts for your appointment tomorrow, keep me updated with your progress

Yes! The not knowing is terrible! The radiologist and my primary had very different opinions about the ultrasound findings and I was starting to think maybe my primary was overreacting. I’m just ready to know what’s going on and get on with my life without this feeling of doom then thinking I’m being dramatic. Thank you for your re

How’d it go at the breast specialist

it went alright. She scheduled me for a biopsy next week to “make sure it’s benign”. It’s odd how the wording me me feel better. She also said the two masses are very small so I think that’s good. How did your appointment go?
