Way to go fellow runners! I'm a bit less of a competitive runner but trying to get back into it. Have not run since my May half. Trying to figure out how to keep my bra from rubbing on the port. Maybe a spring race.
-
I'm thinking if you run through radiation you are stronger than you think you are as far as a marathon goes!
You will be ready for Grandma's. My coach and her husband have both done this and done really well He missed Olympic trials standard by mere seconds (she already qualified).
Do you have a marathon training plan or coach?
-
Plan, yes. Coach, no. I'm nominally in a running club but I run solo. Of course the long runs might change that!
Know and e good coaches in the KC area??
-
I am a solo runner too and I think that really helps in the marathon when you can rely on the strength from those LONG solo runs.
I don't know any Kansas City coaches but there are some great coaching platforms that are online and personalized to each person.
I have been working with Sarah Crouch for about 7 years -- she knows me/gets me. This is a new journey for her though as we tweak and develop a training plan while on these hormone suppressing drugs. I am going to closely look at my runs through the end of the year and then pile up my questions for the onco.
-
i not familiar with anything relating to the port, but ... is it possible when you run to put mepilex over it -- it sticks but is soft on the outside and provides coverage. It can be used more than once and I probably spelled it wrong.
-
@runnershella were you given the C word as a diagnosis or are you still undergoing more testing to find out what is what?
After my mamo, ultrasound, and biopsy and results with the C word, I then went to MD Anderson
They did more testing -- mammo and ultrasound and then decided to do a biopsy (sterotactic) on the left as well. Fortunately that turned out okay.
All the waiting is really tough -- I think it truly helps that we have running as an outlet.
I hope that your Christmas Eve tests go smoothly and that if, in fact, you do need surgery that you can get it schedule quickly. I was shocked how fast they had mine scheduled.
-
The waiting is hard, although my process moved ultra fast (by luck, not need). Happy to answer any questions as you go through this. And yes, the running helped immensely.
I will say I've had a fair amount of scarring of my pec from radiation that's caused a lot of pain and loss of motion. I stretch (and tear) that muscle every day because I'll be dammed if I turn into a chicken wing on that side.
-
I LOVE your attitude -- you read so much negativity but it appears we are a small tribe that PUSH to get our life back.
I only hope in some small way that me openly sharing the intimate details of my story can hope others to join our tribe.
-
Honest question (because I've never used a coach)--would you share how a coach helps? I know I'll execute my training plan, done that for all my half marathons and 10ks etc. What does a coach do beyond laying out a plan?
-
I'll have to check out the mepilex. I've developed an intolerance for most adhesives on bandages so maybe that would work. I used to hang out on an online running board - talk about a wealth of information - but I don't think anything BC related ever came up. Like how to cover a port.
-
Coach can see trends in your progress and tweak plans accordingly -- see when you should back off when you can take more
Also the mental encouragement is great
-
OMG I'm shocked how emotional I am, I just registered for Grandma's Marathon in June and I'm at my desk at work nearly crying. Wow, I did not expect this.
-
I just got the chills thinking how exciting this is.
A co-worker just gave me an incredible gift.
She saw the picture of me after California International at the finish line and she printed it out and put it on canvas.
I am blown away by her kindness.
-
That is a very wonderful gift and I LOVE the photo--doesn't that just say it all?? Rock on, you bad ass
-
maybe someday we can all agree on a running event to meet up and do together
wish I could join you in Grandmas!!!!
-
Hey RunnerShella, thinking of you today. Hope your tests go well and I'm definitely hoping for the best possible outcome.
-
yes definitely -- I hope you get some answers today --- we are here for you!

evening ladies.... Would anyone like to be this years " host" for 2020's new running thread? If not I can do it again. post here if are going to. if not.. Im going on a racecation ( running Dopey .. 48.6 miles) and i can set it up when i get back jan 14th-ish.
also .. for 2020 i joined "run the year" again.. anyone who posts about BC , that I can catch, I direct them here ( much better resource for them ) .. and for any of you who want to join.. its sort of fun . with a "team" or without, its sort of an accountability tracker. all steps/walking/rolling/running count. you decide how to log it. Happy new year
-
what does the host do? I might be interested but I don't know the responsibilities.
Also, where is the group run the year? on this site or elsewhere
?
-
the "host" sets up the 2020 running thread and really just keeps the race list updated when people share what races they are doing ( many didnt share that info this year) .. and posts intermittently to keep the thread active. I just copy and pasted the previous lady's intro then "edit" to add the race info.
heres the link to Run the year/edge .. Run the Year/Edge its just a fun way for accountability
-
i had no idea there was a race list -- how do we find it.
Once I know that I am happy to help keep this active and going
-
so people would post " i did a 5k today/ last week / 3 months ago" but people stopped giving details even when i asked
-
outstanding! Once you set up the new page, post here with the link so people can find it
-
If I did this correctly -- check our our 2020 page: 2020 Running Thread :-)
