Diagnosis changed- Mammary carcinoma

I was diagnosed with Lobular carcinoma a couple of weeks ago, but went to a different hospital for a second opinion. This morning they told me that I don't have Lobular --- it is mammary carcinoma. I can not find that as a type of cancer on this sites "cancer types" page. In fact I can find very little about it. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this or have any idea what it is? I was told it will be treated as ductal.

Hi Jessie,

Here's what I found on this topic: A breast cancer also may be a "mixed tumor," meaning that it contains a mixture of cancerous ductal cells and lobular cells. This type of cancer is also called "invasive mammary breast cancer" or "infiltrating mammary carcinoma." It would be treated as a ductal carcinoma.

Ask fro a copy of your biopsy report. To me (I could be wrong here) mammary carcinoma is cancer of the mammary glad (breast). Lobular would be the specific type. You should then get info on ER, PR and HER2 status.

Mammary simply means breast.  I have the same, and have the mixed diagnosis after surgery pathology.  My treatment is as invasive ductal.   I hope that helps you.

cambsikia --- thanks -- They got my information from one biopsy. If ductal is in the ducts and lobular is in the lobes how can I have both types on one specimen? Yours were at least in different breast - mine must be commingled everywhere. I haven't had the MRI yet -- who knows what they'll find in the other breast. I think I would just like to have lobular like they originally diagnosed.

It sounds similar to mine which was IDC with Lobular features. I have found several people on this site with the same so it's really not that uncommon. It is usually grade 1 or 2 and usually ER+, PR+ and Her2-. and usually has a low Oncotype score. Best Wishes!

Hi Jessie. I too had a mixture of IDC and ILC. It doesn't change the treatment plan really, and like Letsgogolf says, it usually is low grade and very responsive to anti-hormonal pills like Tamoxifen - so that's good! Let us know how we can help.

Oh my gosh - I'm so excited -- thanks Georgia and letsgogolf -- my tumor is 1.3 cm so basically small. The other information is not back yet. This change worried me more than my original diagnosis of lobular. I was planning a double MX because lobular tends to spread to the other breast. Maybe now I can have a lumpectomy. Wouldn't that be wonderful!!!! Thanks again - I really am much calmer and happy.
