The "Is it Going to Kill Me?" game.
After being irradiated, poisoned and sliced and diced, I am sitting here at a buffet staring at a tiny cup of chocolate mousse wondering if it's going to kill me, and the most analytical part of my brain is saying "Maybe".
This was supposed to be a relaxing trip.

I don't know what kind of support you were looking for with this post, but I laughed.
-
hapa:
That works :-)

This also made me laugh. My thoughts take me down the path of how cancer has just messed with my brain to where I can make morbid jokes and look at a little old lady escorting her O2 tank and think she is lucky to have lived so long. Death by cancer or death by chocolate mousse...I say bring on the chocolate! Letโs defy the odds lol
-
I sometimes look at cocktails that way, then I say screw it, Iโm gonna die happy ๐ ๐ท๐ฆ๐๐ฅ
-
I looked at my lunch options this way the other day. Salami sandwich vs cheese sandwich. Death by high fat dairy vs death by processed meats ๐ค I think Iโll have a glass of wine while I decide! ๐ฅ๐

I seriously struggle with how restrictive to be. I mean, I was a vegan trail runner already at dx. No alcohol, no processed food, nothing deep fried. I put in ~25 miles/week on mountain trails, ate kale and beet salads for lunch every day. I was very very healthy. I thought I was doing it to avoid getting cancer in my 70s like my dad, but hoo boy that did not work.
I have almost the exact same thought process as in the OP. I look at stuff I'm about to eat and think "yeah, this might kill me". But what can you do?
-
Truly...everything can kill you. We hear it all day every day on the news. If I had to choose between lettuce and chocolate mousse the mousse wins every time!
I remember all the years of news about what does and doesn't cause cancer. I always used to say โeverything is going to eventually end up causing cancer". If I knew that I'd actually get it in my 40's, would I have paid more attention? Probably. But in the end could have gotten it anyway.
It becomes super weird the conversations that go on in our heads. I hope you ate the mousse!
-
hapa, I was like you but not quite so good. Trail runner, only whole grains, organic veggies, very little meat and almost no red meat. Not to say I didnโt have my vices but nothing that would explain BC at 42. I also really struggle with how restrictive to be (should I be fasting??! Cut out all sugar and alcohol??) but I suspect the stress thatcauses is not helping either!

Sitting here chomping black walnut coffee fudge while I read. Nuts are healthy.
-
If it ever turns out that coffee or sex cause breast cancer, I think I'll just go ahead and die. A girl's gotta have priorities!
-
Wiggings2000:
I did eat the mousse...and the creme puff and cobbler and waffles and eggs...I also had a salad.
-
AliceBastable:
Nuts were my go to snack for a while.
-
The lettuce is more likely than the mousse to give you fatal food poisoning. Thatโs my story & Iโm sticking to it:)
-
AliceB that cracked me up! Thanks ladies for such a great thread!
-
yeah for the mousse!!!!! The mousse wins!!!!
-
Alice - "Nuts are healthy" comment - YAY!
WC3 - I'm sure that the salad counteracted any doom caused by the rest!
-
I am glad you ate the mousse. Life is to short to not have some fun. I ate peanut butter m&ms yesterday and they were totally worth it.
-
I made an Irish Whiskey bundt cake yesterday - and had a smallish slice For the holidays, of course.
-
Really, a "like" button is missing here. You nailed it, Beeline! ๐๐๐

thanks Jaboo, sometimes itโs the only way!! ๐

Iโm not doing the abstinence thing for any food group. Everything in moderation is my motto. I know of countless women like several of you who led the super healthy life and still got BC. Thatโs not to say some foods canโt affect your health because Iโm sure they do. The fact is thougheven the oncologists donโt know why some of us drew the unlucky draw.
In my case and my sister's our mother had BC so we were in the high risk category even though 70% of BC cases are not genetically driven.
I have to admit Iโm a sugar baby and I love red meat. I do try not to overdo either but since itโs Christmas Iโm giving myself a pass.
So I say go for the mousse!

This also made me laugh. I have also tried to be good but my diet today has been a bowl of cereal, 4 Pecan Tarts, 2 pieces of Vanilla Pecan Caramel Fudge (found the recipe on Facebook) and 2 Lemon Bars. Oh, and that bag of Cheetos that I had for lunch. Oh dear...I have fallen off the healthy diet wagon again!
-
Iโve wondered that also many times. I think moderation is the key, like other women have posted. But is it the food I ate as a kid, teenager, or young adult that caused it?! I donโt know! I think eating healthy 80% of the time is a good rule to follow. But Iโve been slipping lately too. I feel like Iโm playing Russian roulette with my life sometimes.ย

You made me laugh! I, too, will have the vino and mousse
DX 2017 Stage IV, de novo as well. Went to spine. Docs say they just want you to keep your weight up (normal)....eat what you want, just in moderation. They said to enjoy my Hagen Daz....yay! Am in a cancer trial now; chemo worked a bit but not enough. Now doing monoclonal antibody therapy....not sure I'll get my five years they say is average, but still feeling ok, except for left arm neuropathy & lymphedema....if it weren't for that I'd feel good! Merry Christmas to all....enjoy!
