Lexapro and xanax

Options

after my double mastectomy my PCP prescribed Lexapro 20mg for my depression! It has "helped". My anxiety is another issue though so she prescribed xanax, it has worked wonders! But I have read about it being addictive and not usually prescribed for long periods. I'm concerned about what to do about my anxiety when the xanax runs out! I'm active, I exercise, all around healthy! I've always had some issues with anxiety, but nothing compared to what it's like now!

What other options do I have for treating my anxiety

Xanax and other benzos are dependence forming, that's true.

Can I ask how long between the Lexapro Rx and the Xanax one? My anxiety shot through the roof with this and my psych also added Lexapro for me, which is now replacing my old ad, which isn't compatible with tamoxifen. But she said the full anti anxiety impact of the Lexapro could take a whole month to be felt. I was like, no way I can get through a month of this. She approved me using a higher and more frequent dose of my Ativan (in the same family as Xanax) to get through as I needed. I had been using a very low dose most every night. She said that's not ideal and at some point she wants me to come off, but she's not concerned about it either. So, don't sorry too much about the Xanax, I think.

That said, the Lexapro did finally kick in over time and I'm actually using the Ativan less now than then I started.

There are definitely other options for anti anxiety. Do you have/can you get a psychiatrist? I am now seeing one at the cancer center. They will know more than a GP. But you may find that the Lexapro, plus actually getting past the initial stages, which are excruciating for anxiety, may be enough.

One non prescription thing that was recommended to me by a past psychologist that I've actually found very helpful is inositol. I get the powder and take a generous tablespoon morning and evening.

    Good luck!!

LGB10...so sorry you are suffering with depression/anxiety. Yes it takes 5-6 weeks to get the full benefit of anti depressants. Taking a benzo such as Ativan or Xanax can help until the antidepressant kicks in is fine but please be careful! Benzos are very addictive and can be difficult to come off of. My advice would be to wean off them slowly after you get the full benefit of Lexepro. Been there, done that! Good luck and keeps posted.
