Anyone have a benign BIRADS 5 rated mammo?

Hi Everyone,

I am new and this is my first post. I have heterogenously dense breasts, I had a 3D mammogram back in September 2018 which was "normal" with "no significant change from previous". About 3 weeks after that, during a self exam in the shower, I felt a pea sized lump in my left breast, upper outer quadrant. I went to a breast health clinic for another mammo and ultrasound, which they rated a BIRADS 5. I had my core needle biopsy yesterday and am awaiting the results. I was wondering if anyone here has had the experience of a BIRADS 5 mammo which turned out to be benign?

Hey Kec, and welcome.

I have been here for YEARS, and yes, sometimes a BIRAD5 does come back negative. There are a few things that can mimic cancer on imaging. Things like a radial scar, fat necrosis, and a couple of other things.

My question to you is that between the time from Sept to now, have you experienced any kind of injury to the area that is of concern

Hi Marie, even though I have not received my results yet, to say I am shocked and stunned by everything that has transpired would be an understatement. I had a 3D mammogram in September which was “normal”. About 3 weeks after that, I found a lump during my self exam. After a whirlwind of tests, here I am awaiting results of my core needle biopsy. No family history, I run half marathons, and I’m a strict vegetarian who neither smokes nor drinks. I have been completely blindsided by all of this. No trauma to my breast that I can recall. :

Adenosis (benign) is also mimicking breast carcinoma.  It'll help to post here your imaging reports as there are members who are certified breast radiologists and can give you their piece of mind.  Wholehearted benign wishes for your biopsy results

Truth be told, based on the observations here, getting breast cancer is often a crap shoot.

The two biggest factors being 1) a woman and 2) getting older. There is even now some suggestion that having children raises the risk.

How old are you? I am guessing you don't have a copy of the radiology report?

Either way, since you have already had a biopsy done, you will know soon enough.

Hi again, I’m 46. 2 kids.Not menopausal yet. My US report basically just says irregular hypoechoic mass with no internal vascularity. Thanks and prayers, Karen

Karen,

"No internal vascularity" is a good thing. Cancer needs a blood supply. Hang in there, and keep breathing slowly.

Marie, thank you again for your kindness. I think the not knowing is the worst part. It is Friday and has officially been 48 hours since my biopsy. I guess I'll have to sweat it out during the weekend. Hugs and prayers to all

That's pretty much what my report said. Then a pathologist half did the test and came up with Lobular carcinoma --- Lobular does not normally show up on Mammograms -- mine did not. Also it normally does not present with a lump. However, I also felt a lump on my upper outer left breast so had the ultrasound. Had a second core biopsy at another hospital yesterday and am waiting on results as you are. I am still praying for benign, but not as likely for me since I am past menopause. My internist told me to get a second opinion from a different pathology group no matter what the finding are -- both if positive or negative. Good luck!!

Mimi2six: You are a sweetheart. Putting others feelings before yours in these difficult situations is almost unheard of. I too want results as I can interpret them and hate to wait. In Canada, we are just beginning to have this option. But some will still benefit from waiting for medical interpretation. How do our poor doctors and technicians know who to support and who to simply provide immediate results. I just had an annual mammogram and my technician clearly knew I was ready to fall apart. They gave me immediate results. But if it had been difficult news, they would have really struggled. I get their dilemma. We all have different levels of knowledge and tolerance. Just wish they could Birad that and prevent as much unecesssry stress as possible
