Recurrence while taking arimidex

hello

I just had a biopsy to address microcalcifications. I had idc 6 years ago that was estrogen positive. I was stage 2a. I had lumpectomy, followed by chemo and radiation. I have been on anastrazole (arimidex)since then. I just read my biopsy report in my electronic record. It says I have DCIS-basically stage 0 malignancy. I am calling doc first thing in the morning. Any ideas on how I could have a recurrence while still taking aromatase inhibitors. I thought the med would protect me

thanks

So sorry you are dealing with a recurrence. Unfortunately aromatase inhibitors do not always prevent a recurrence. They do reduce rate of recurrence by 50 percent. So if your recurrence rate was 20 percent, it would be lowered to 10 percent but that's not zero, so you can still have a recurrence while taking them. DCIS is early stage so you should have a good prognosis. Good luck and keep us posted.
