Should I start prolia?

Had a bone density scan that shows osteopenia (I am on lupron plus anastrazole) and my doctor suggests I start prolia shots every 6 months. My sister, who is an endocrinologist and deals with bone density problems, does not think my level of osteopenia indicates the need to start prolia yet; in fact, she showed me an algorithm she uses as her basis.

My gut tells me to do it, since stronger bones can't hurt. Anyone have input? Not sure why my sister would be opposed.

Kathy, you have less difficult options for increasing bone density, like a weekly Fosomax pill. So perhaps your sister thought shots were more complicated and painful than a pill? And of course increasing your calcium intake and your exercise would help a lot without any medical intervention at all.

I'm 60 and taking Fosomax tho it's nice to know there are other options out there. Prolia can reduce the risk of bone mets too but if you are stage 1A like me that's not particularly important.

    Hope that helps.

I was on Fosamax for six months after my dexa scan showed that I had full-blown osteoporosis. My oncologist switched me to Prolia once she figured out how to get insurance to pay for Prolia. Fosamax was OK, but Prolia is more convenient. I will be having a dexa scan in a bit; I hope it shows that the Prolia has helped.
