Hello! So I am almost three weeks out from reconstruction and I was wondering about what opinions are on the best treatment for scars. When do you start with topical treatments and what products or techniques did you find effective? While I know they will always be there, mine are dark and thick at this point, especially the left side where I had multi- focal cancer. Thoughts?

Hi Dovely... I had a less invasive surgery than you did (lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy). My lumpectomy incision is thicker than the SNB one. I would definitely wait until any stitches and drains are out, and the skin is healed (not raw, no scabs). During radiation treatments, I just used the calendula cream by RO recommended. Since then, I’ve been using Derma E’s scar gel. It’s a thick gel, but rubs in without being greasy. Ulta stores carry it, and I think Whole Foods does too. Your body also needs 2-3 servings of protein per day for good healing. Good luck!

I would highly recommend the CVS band of silicone bandages (CVS Scar Stripes) I used them on mine and my scars look fantastic. They come in 1 inch by 6 inch bandages that covered my entire DMX scars. I wore each stripe about 2 weeks taking off to shower every couple of days then reapply. They are reuseable as long as they are sticky.

I also have the Embrace bandages but those are a lot more expensive and I got those when they had a 50% off sale earlier. I will use them after my exchange next year sometime.

My PS did say that a silicone bandages were they only thing proven to improve the appearance of scars
